Prior to arriving at Cloud, Greg Brummett coached for one year at the Air Force Academy. Before that, he spent four years as the pitching coach at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. During that time, he coached six players who went on to play professional baseball. Two players, John Maine and Jason Stanford, made it to the major leagues, playing for the New York Mets and the Cleveland Indians, respectively.

His pitching staff produced six Conference USA selections, two pre-season All-Americans, one Conference USA pitcher of the year, and one member of Team USA. In 1999, his pitching staff at UNC-Charlotte led the Conference USA in strikeouts and fewest walks allowed.

A 1991 graduate of Wichita State University, Brummett was a two-time all-conference pitcher, Missouri Valley pitcher of the year, and a first-team All-American in 1989. During that season, Brummett and the Shockers went to the College World Series Championship, where he earned most valuable player of the series. The Shockers won the series. Brummett was inducted into the Wichita State Hall of Fame in 1995, with a career record of 43-11, in 424 innings, with 364 strikeouts and 21 complete games over 59 starts.

As a professional pitcher, Brummett played with the San Francisco Giants, the Minnesota Twins, and AAA with the Boston Red Sox. He had 13 appearances in the major leagues, going 4-4 in 72 innings. In his eight years as a professional player, he earned numerous honors, including Most Inspirational Player in the Giants' organization in 1989.

In 1993, with the San Francisco Giants, Brummett was voted the top rookie in spring training, and given the Harry Jordan Award. In 1996, he was voted to the College World Series All-Decade Team of the 1980s, and in 2005, was voted the 23rd best player in College World Series History.

Brummett and his wife Donna, have a son, Garrett, and a daughter, Brynn.
