April 15, 2002 Davis and Thomas named KIAC Pitcher and Player of the Week
Brad Davis, a freshman from Louisville KY, was named KIAC Pitcher of the Week for April 8-14. In a 3-2 complete game win over Brescia University, Brad allowed 2 unearned runs on 5 hits while notching 11 strikeouts without a walk. Davis ran his record to 8-3 on the season with the victory. Kurt Thomas, a senior from Lebanon KY, had 8 hits in 17 at bats for a .471 batting average. Kurt added a double, triple and 2 home runs to go along with 10 runs batted in. Davis and Thomas led Spalding to a 4-1 mark for the week. Spalding is now 36-16 overall and 9-3 in the KIAC
May 7, 2002 Ford and Three Others Named All-Region
Jake Ford was named Region XII Player of the Year earlier this week. Ford, a junior third baseman from Louisville Butler High School set several offensive records in helping Spalding University to a 44-18 regular season record and a second place finish in the KIAC Tournament. Also honored as All-Region performers were junior 1st baseman Jason Betts, junior outfielder John Moel; and freshman pitcher Brad Davis. Spalding University begins play in the Region XII Tournament on May 8th at Derby City Field in Louisville, KY.
May 11, 2002 Spalding University Wins Region XII Championship
Led by a stingy pitching staff and defense that only allowed 13 runs in 6 games, Spalding University fought out of the loser's bracket with a doubleheader sweep of Brevard College (NC) to win the Region XII Championship. Junior pitcher Steve Hicks won two games and Ryan Patton added two saves to lead a tremendous effort by the pitching staff. Freshman Brad Davis and junior Jared Durham pitched complete game victories and Jason Betts worked 8 innings in the loser's bracket final victory over Tennessee Wesleyan College. Spalding opens play in the NAIA Super Regional Tournament on Thursday, May 15th at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.
May 17, 2002 Spalding University Wins South Central Super Regional
Spalding University advances to the NAIA World Series with a 7-2 win over Lambuth University. Freshman righthander Brandon Taylor earned the win with 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief of Steve Hicks. Ashley Cassity and Kurt Thomas led the offensive attack with 3 hits each and Thomas added 2 RBI. Spalding won the 1st game of the Super Regional 9-4 on Thursday night behind the 8 inning pitching effort of Brad Davis, who picked up his 12th win of the season. Jason Betts went 4-5 with 5 RBI, and Joey Vincent also went 4-5 in the 13-hit attack. Spalding earns its 1st trip to Lewiston, Idaho for the NAIA World Series to be held May 24-31.
June 3, 2002 NAIA Honors Four All-Americans from Spalding
The NAIA honored four Spalding University players as All-Americans this week. Junior third baseman Jake Ford was named 2nd team All-American while juniors Jason Betts (1b), John Moel (OF) and freshman Brad Davis (LHP) were named honorable mention All-Americans. These are the first players to be named All-Americans in Spalding's 3-year existence as a baseball program.
