Holloway signs with Houston Astros

Former Russellville High School pitcher Jarred Holloway signed a contract with the Houston Astros Saturday night at his Russellville home. Holloway, a 6-3, 230-pound left-hander from St. Petersburg (Fla.) College, was selected by the Astros as the 10th pick of the 10th round, the 302nd pick overall, of the Major League Baseball Draft on Friday.
Holloway was a three-year pitcher for Russellville coach Denny McCrotty, where he went 2-4 with an earned run average of 1.60. Armed with a fastball in the low 90s, Holloway was rated by Baseball America as the top prep prospect in Arkansas in 2006. He signed with Mississippi State University out of high school and later transferred to St. Petersburg College. He played for the Midland Redskins, one of the nation's top pre-college summer league teams, in the summer of 2006.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Jarred,” McCrotty said Saturday. “It has been a lifelong dream for him to play pro ball. Now he gets that opportunity.”
Holloway, 19, was also selected by the Washington Nationals in the 49th round of Major League Baseball’s 2006 draft.
He is the son of Mark and Leslie Holloway of Russellville.

Jarred, during his senior season, consistently threw in the high 80's and low 90's, topping out at 95 miles per hour. During the summer of 2006, he is playing for the prestigious Midland Redskins, one of the nation's top pre-college summer league teams. Drafted in the 49th round by the Washington Nationals in the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft.  As a junior, was 2-2 with an ERA of 0.75 with 96 strikeouts in 44 innings. Allowed 20 walks and 17 hits.

Prior to his senior season, Jarred consistently threw in the 89 to 91 mile per hour range, topping out at 93 at the University of Texas summer baseball camp that he attended in 2005.An outstanding student in the classroom who is taking Honors classes. Signed with Mississippi State. Chose MSU over Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Penn State, among others.

Three-year starting pitcher and two-time all-conference honoree at Russellville High School ... Coached by Denny McCrotty ... Compiled a 2-4 record with a 1.60 earned run average, allowing 14 hits while striking out 52 in 42-2/3 innings ... Named to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-State team and rated by Baseball America as the top prep prospect in Arkansas ... Competed in the summer (2006) for the national champion Midland Redskins of Cincinnati, Ohio, ... Notched a 5-0 record, registered 42 strikeouts in 25 innings ... Named to the X-Tra Innings Arkansas All-Junior team in 2005 after compiling a 2-1 record with an 0.78 earned run average ... Registered 86 strikeouts in 44-2/3 innings ... Also played first base and compiled a .448 batting average ... Selected to compete in the National Blue-Grey Classic in Tampa, Fla., and the WWBA World Championships in Jupiter, Fla. ... Compiled a 3-1 record with a 1.90 ERA as a sophomore in 2004 ... Member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
