A 26 year Alaskan, ED MERDES, brings a new dimension to Alaska politics. Dynamic, energetic, personable and sensitive, ED MERDES is uniquely qualified to give honest, unbiased and fair representation to all of the people in all of our state. As a Juneau resident for 6 years, he knows the people of Southeastern Alaska and the special problems that they face. As a Fairbanks resident for over 20 years, he understands the needs and special requirements of Interior Alaska. As cofounder o his Anchorage Law Office 10 years ago, he is aware of the aspiratioins and expectations of the greater Anchorage boel and the surrounding areas that make up Southcentral Alaska. As legal counsel for various native corporations he travels extensively in the Alaskan bush and understands the pressures and problems throughout that have been placed on our native peoples as they come face to face with modern technology and assume their new role as trustees of vast stretches of land that will shape the future of Alaska.
ED MERDES was born in Lettsdale, Pennsylvania on Jan. 12, 1926. Here he distinguished himself academically and athletically in the local school system. After a year at the University of Pittsburgh, he was granted a full athletic scholarship by Cornell University and excelled in both football and baseball. A hardworking studnet, he was elected to the honorary society in both his junior and senior years at Cornell. After receiving his bachelors degree in Industrial Labor Relations in 1949, he continued at the Cornell Graduate Law School and earned his Doctor of Law degree in 1951. He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1951 and the Alaska Bar in 1952.
ED MERDES is a family man who has worked hard all of his life to contribute to those areas that he feels are important to a strong Alaska and a strong America. Versatile and veriegated his interests range across the board. His major efforts have been directed toward: youth activities, sports, service organizations, local and state government, agriculture, business opportunities, Alaskan land management, the legal profession and the armed forces. The brief listing on the back, while not comprehensive will give you the salient facts on a man who has served, is serving and will continue to serve all of Alaska.
