  • 2/24/4: Looks to impress this spring - "When Royce Ring signed his first contract with the Chicago White Sox in 2002, it included a clause requiring the team to invite him to its major league spring training camp this season. That clause was invalidated when Ring and two other minors leaguers were traded to the Mets last July for second baseman Roberto Alomar. "I kind of wondered what would happen," said Ring, a 23-year-old left-handed relief pitcher. "They were under no obligation."

Royce Ring Sets SDSU Single-Season Saves Record

"Aztec closer Royce Ring tossed a scoreless ninth to preserve a victory for starter Rory Shortell on Friday April 19th. The save was Ring's 13th of the season passing the single-season mark set by Curtis Smith in 1979.

"It's nice to be able to look back and say I accomplished something like that," Ring said of his record.

Since becoming an Aztec Ring has moved from part-time hitter, part-time pitcher as a freshman to the team's full-time closer the past two seasons.

"My freshman year wasn't that good for me," Ring said. "I gave it my all but I couldn't get out of innings without giving up a couple runs. I really worked hard in the off-season to get myself into shape and I came out last year and had a pretty productive year. Everything has been rolling for me since then."

Ring piled up nine save last year as a sophomore which earned him a spot on U.S. National team. Now the junior not only broke the single-season and career saves marks at SDSU - he is also leading the nation.
