1/22/8: Ryan still adjusting to MLB status "It doesn't seem real, to be honest," Ryan said Friday night during the Cardinals Caravan stop at Drury University's Weiser Gym. "People throw that 'big-leaguer' title at you and, I don't know, it really hasn't set in."
7/29/7: Redbird rebounds following college "Redbirds shortstop Brendan Ryan wasn't sure where his career was headed when he was dismissed from the Lewis-Clark State baseball team for the fourth and final time during the 2003 season. I figured I was gonna get a shot (at playing pro ball)," Ryan said. "But I wondered, 'Am I gonna get thrown into the 90th round because of a guy who has a personality conflict with me?' This isn't right. I've worked too hard. Ryan's relationship with longtime Lewis-Clark State coach Ed Cheff was a tumultuous one. "Sometimes he didn't focus as much as I thought he could as a student," Cheff said. "He's a bright guy. At that point in his life, (school) wasn't as important as it should have been. ... He had some things he needed to get better at, and he actually went out and did it. Ryan, whose time-keeping skills have occasionally been an issue within the Cardinals organization, drew headlines when he showed up late for a game in New York against the Mets. It turned out that Ryan's cab driver had taken him to Yankee Stadium instead of Shea Stadium. "
6/2/7: Ryan called up, hitless in first major league at-bat He was informed that he'd gotten "the call" following Memphis' game on Friday. "After the game, Anthony [Reyes] bought the spread and I was hanging out enjoying a nice meal," Ryan said. "Hammer [manager Chris Maloney] called me in and was like, 'I've got some bad news for you. We're not going to have you around here anymore.'"
3/14/7: Brendan Ryan (02) shows he can have a future in the Majors Tony La Russa said, "He has shown big league ability. He now has to show major league consistency."

Zak Basch hits GW-HR in Kenai Wiffleball Tourney
On Memories of playing in Fairbanks and the ABL:
- There were just so many good memories out there. Everything from making new friends to playing great baseball and it was definitely a minor league lifestyle. I got a little bit of preparation for the next level. Fishing and some of the wiffleball games and some of the fun times after the games. It was a real special summer. Anyone that’s good enough to go out there, I couldn’t recommend it enough.
On winning the NBC Title
- I went to Lewis-Clark St. (Lewiston, ID) and I won an NAIA National Championship there and that was great and I’m not taking anything away from that, but it just seemed like with the level of competition up there that summer, it was pretty special. It’s probably up there at the top. I’d sure like to win a World Series up here (MLB) but that was definitely one of my best memories.
How playing with the Goldpanners impacted his development as a player:
Well it was my first opportunity to swing a wood bat and learn what that was all about so when I did get drafted, it wasn’t the newest thing. Playing against a bunch of NAIA (at L-C St.) guys, there are players here and there, and again, not to take anything away from NAIA but we were playing really good baseball up there (in Alaska) and it was fun to be a part of and we had a heck of a team. It was pretty special.
On living in the Olympic Village:
The Olympic Village! Anyone who’s played in Alaska knows about the Olympic Village. I’m telling you, you’re living in a parking space and that was about it. There’s a bed and a closet somewhere stuck in there. You had to walk a couple of trailers over to get to the bathroom. You didn’t go barefoot anywhere but you’re right there next to the field. But you know what? We had some good stories to come away with living there with some teammates and that was pretty fun too.
