  • 5/13/7: Leaving the Diamond "You were the best player on your high school team, maybe even in the league, star player in college culminating in being drafted by a major league team.Next thing you know you’re bouncing between organizations, earning the dreaded title of an “organization” or “4A”player” and then you’re finished with baseball in your mid-twenties trying to figure out what to do with your life."

  • 4/17/6: Greg homered in his third straight game as visiting Huntsville topped Montgomery, 5-2, on Monday. The Stars never trailed after taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Sain's two-run homer and Callix Crabbe's solo shot. Sain has four homers and 10 RBIs in eight games.

His father, Tom Sain (73-74), played in the Minnesota Twins' and Houston Astros' organizations, making it as high as Triple-A. His older brother Grady played college baseball. "My dad is my biggest mentor, my biggest critic, my biggest pick-me-up when I need it," Sain said. "He's totally for me, to advance me as far as he can, and he's been very critical as far as my maturation throughout my career. Basically, I think a lot of the tools that I have have definitely been defined by him."

  • MILB Hilite 4/18: LAKE ELSINORE (CAL) 3B Greg Sain, who led the Short-Season Class A Northwest League in home runs in 2001 with 16, went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for Lake Elsinore. Sain brings the family name, talent back to Fairbanks

Greg Sain has connections. Just his name conjures admiration in the eyes of old-timers who remember watching his father, infielder Tommy Sain, hit his way to two unforgettable seasons, topping the Goldpanner clubs in both 1973 and ’74 with batting averages above .300. Over the years, the elder Sain has remained good friends with Goldpanners GM Don Dennis.

He played his first season with the Panners last summer.  He had heard the stories of his father’s days in Fairbanks and wanted to experience them for himself. Although the 1999 summer was cut short for Greg because of a broken bone in his arm, he had seen enough to know that he wanted to return. more...
