WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON sophomore third baseman Matt
Stevens has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the
Week and UCLA junior right-handed pitcher Hector Ambriz has been
named Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 7 - 13, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced
today.
Stevens, from Lake Stevens, Wash., went 7-for-14 (.500) last week in
Washington's three wins over Santa Clara and loss to San Diego. The
sophomore hit four home runs, two of which came in back-to-back games
Saturday and Sunday vs. Santa Clara. Stevens batted in 11 runs for the week,
walked three times, scored six runs and stole a base.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Stevens' career, while it is
the 50th such honor for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is also
the first for Ambriz, and the 39th selection all-time for UCLA.

pick ... hit .300 with 25 RBI as a junior and .305 with 14 stolen bases as a
senior, when he was also 6-1 on the mound ... played three seasons of
varsity basketball and was a first-team All-WesCo pick as a junior and
second-teamer as a senior ... graduated with a 3.75 grade point average.
