Steve Swisher belted a tie-breaking homer in the seventh inning to give the Goldpanners a 3-2 championship- game victory over Anchorage in a rematch of the 1971 NBC title game. Center fielder Kerry Dineen of Fairbanks, then a senior at the University of San Diego, was chosen as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. He hit .480 with 12 hits in 25 trips and stole five bases. Dave Winfield, after appearing in five games as a pitcher in 1971, played mostly left field for Fairbanks and batted .222 with two homers.
