Fairbanks won its third straight NBC national tournament crown by defeating Boulder, Colo., 7-5. The Goldpanners broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fourth inning on a grand-slam homer by second baseman Jeff Ellison off of Boulder ace pitcher Jim Gideon. Fairbanks left-hander Floyd Bannister, in relief of starter Dave Schuler, hurled the final four innings to pick up a save. He allowed only one hit and an unearned run. The Most Valuable Player of the tournament was Fairbanks outfielder Steve Kemp, while right-handed pitcher George Milke was named the outstanding pitcher.
