The Kenai, Alaska, Peninsula Oilers joined Anchorage and Fairbanks as legitimate Alaska baseball powerhouses by defeating Fairbanks 6-3 for the NBC national crown.  It was the first championship appearance for Kenai and the seventh year in a row in which Fairbanks was involved in the title game.  Kenai scored a run in the bottom of the 11th inning when Fairbanks hurler Chris Codiroli walked Kenai's Howie Shapiro with the bases loaded to force in the winning run.  Fairbanks had defeated previously unbeaten Kenai 6-3 earlier in the evening to force a second title game behind the pitching of right hander Mike Boddicker.  Shapiro was the Kenai hero in the game, driving home four runs and clubbing a homer.  Kenai's Bob Skube, an outfielder, was named the Most Valuable Player in the tournament while right-hander John (Tug) McGraw of Hays, Kansas, was the outstanding pitcher, leading the underdog Lark to victories over heavily-favored Boulder and Anchorage before the Larks eventual were eliminated.
