The Goldpanners jumped on Liberal ace right-hander Mike Moore for four runs in the first three innings and defeated the BeeJays 8-4 to win the NBC national title for the fifth time. The second-place finish was Liberal's fourth. The loss was the first for Moore in seven national tournament decisions dating back to the '79 tourney. He was named the tourney's outstanding pitcher for the second year in a row; however. Fairbanks roughed up Liberal pitching for 11 hits in the championship game, including two by first baseman Alvin Davis and left fielder Stan Holmes. Centerfielder Kevin McReynolds drove home two runs in the title game and was named the Most Valuable Player in the tourney.
