Staff reports

Offense was the name of the game Monday night as the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks pounded out a 13-6 victory over the Bay Area, Calif., Stars at Growden Memorial Park.

The victory boosted the Panners record to 24-16 heading into the final home game of the regular season tonight against the Stars at Growden.

Meanwhile, the Panners quest to finish in second place in the Alaska Baseball League standings were put on hold when the Mat-Su Miners registered a 5-1 victory over the Peninsula Oilers on Monday night in Kenai.

The win improved the Miners league record to 15-12 in the ABL standings and moved them .003 percentage points ahead of the Panners (16-13) in the league standings.

If the Miners win their final two games at Peninsula tonight at Wednesday, they will finish in second place. If the Miners and Oilers split, then the Panners and Miners will have a one-game playoff for second place on Friday in Anchorage. If the Miners lose both games, then the Panners will finish second.

Peninsula has clinched the league championship and has earned one of the ABL's two berths to the National Baseball Congress World Series next month in Wichita, Kan.

Whichever team finishes second will earn the league's second berth to the NBC Tournament.

The Panners cracked out 21 hits in Monday night's victory, including a 5-for-5 performance by shortstop Arik Van Zandt.

Van Zandt had a triple in the Panners five-run eighth inning that broke open a tight game. His other four hits were all singles. He scored three times.

Light-hitting center fielder Nate Sickler went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a trip in the seventh inning.

Jeff Phelps also had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Jason Luker earned the win for the Panners, working the first six innings before giving way to Ryan Johnson, who worked the final three innings to earn a save in his first mound appearance of the season.
