The North County Waves Semi-Pro (Amateur) Baseball Team will begin the 2001 season, for the third straight year, Memorial Day Weekend in San Luis Obispo. The team is made up of  some  of  the  finest  college  players  not only in  the  county   but   in  the

United States.  Mixed in with these players are not only ex-college players, but also ex-minor league players as well. Over the course of the last four years, thirteen players have signed professional baseball contracts after playing for the Waves. The Waves’ main focus is to give these players the chance to compete against the finest amateur competition in the country.  The Waves are affiliated with the National Baseball Congress, NBC, which is considered the finest amateur baseball organization in the country.

The highlight of the Waves' season was winning the NBC Western Regional tournament July 4th weekend. The Waves finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and beat the San Diego Barona Stars in the championship game 6-3.  Waves outfielder Tony Perez, a freshman at the University of San Diego, was named tournament MVP.  By winning the NBC Western Regional Tournament, the Waves qualified for the NBC World Series in Wichita, Kansas.  At the NBC World Series, the Waves won their first two games, which included upsetting one of the top teams in the nation, the Topeka Capitols, 3-1.    The   Waves   then   proceeded  to   lose   their  last  two   games   to   the San Francisco Seals, who finished third in the tournament 6-5 and then lost to Athletes in Action who finished fourth in the tournament 10-6.  With a 2-2 record, the Waves placed seventeenth in the tournament, a very respectable finish for a first-time entry.
