| Panners put on display By BOB ELEY The Alaska Goldpanners' bats came alive on Sunday evening. The Panners banged out 17 hits and used a pair of five-run innings to overwhelm the Oceanside, Calif., Waves, 13-2, on a sun-drenched, 80-degree night at Growden Memorial Park. The victory boosted the Panners' record to 3-2 (1-1 in the Alaska Baseball League) heading into tonight's 7 p.m. contest against the Waves at Growden. Every Goldpanner had at least one hit and all but one of the nine position players who saw action scored at least one run. Shortstop Grant Rogers and right fielder Scott Robinson each went 3-for-5 in the contest to lead the Goldpanner offensive onslaught. Robinson doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Third baseman Brandon Averill and designated hitterpitcher Marc Kaiser each had two hits and drove in four runs. Averill connected for a two-run homer to cap the Panners' five-run eighth inning. Second baseman Ryan Haag and first baseman Mike Hofius Also had a pair of hits for Alaska. Haag scored three times, while Hofius scored twice and drove in two runs. While the Panners were roughing up the Waves' pitching staff, pitchers Clay Johnson and Marc Kaiser combined to scatter nine hits, walk three and strike out six. Johnson didn't allow a run in his five innings of work to earn the victory. Kaiser pitched the final four innings and gave up both runs, but only allowed two hits in his four innings out of the bullpen. The Panners came out swinging right from the start, scoring five runs in the first inning to put the game away early. Averill delivered a two-run single, while Hofius and Tim Montgomery delivered run-scoring singles and Robinson had a run-scoring groundout. The Panners added two more runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Hofius and Kaiser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After Oceanside picked up a pair of runs in the sixth, the Panners added one in the bottom half of the inning when Kaiser singled home Robinson. Leading 8-2, the Panners scored five times in the eighth to put an end to any hopes of an Oceanside comeback. Robinson doubled in one run, Kaiser delivered a two-run single and Averill capped the inning with his two-run blast. Oceanside starter Jason Clemenson was tagged with the loss after giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in 323 innings. June 17, 2002, Daily News-Miner |
