Growden Park Duty Schedule | 2002 California Dons 11/17: Anchorage mayor still wants minor league team But Dennis Mattingly, founder and general manager of the Anchorage Bucs baseball club, said there's only a remote chance a minor league team would work here. "We're too far out of the mainstream for the minor leagues," he said. "It is too costly." 11/12: 11/3/2 7.9 Mag Quake in Fairbanks 11/12: Will Fenton (03) Added to 2003 Roster 11/12: Brad Davis (03) Added to 2003 Roster 11/12: Nick Walsh (03) Added to 2003 Roster 11/2: Playoffs stars have roots in Alaska 11/2: Don't think, Mr. Mayor, please - "Many of the ABL's college players are all-stars and many have been drafted but stayed in school instead (and most of those get drafted higher the next time they're draft eligible). Tons of them never make it to the major leagues, either, but the number of Fairbanks Goldpanners who've made it to the bigs -- 180 and counting -- can surely rival those of most short-season A league teams." 11/2: 7.9 mag quake hits Fairbanks 10/25: Good to be a Goldpanner - Don Dennis - General Relativity "Zak was welcomed back to work in the team's Pannervision operation (due to his fine personality) but with a new field manager, Ed Cheff, the amount of playing time was to be determined. The rest is history." 10/22: 6.7 Mag Quake shakes Fairbanks 10/1: Cincinnati's DiEduardo named Peninsula Oilers' Manager 9/12: Championship Game Pictures - GlacierPilots 9/1: 2002 Goldpanners Most Valuable Players 9/1: A League Of Their Own - Don Dennis "..just a year ago at the fall meeting the assembled general managers voted to change tie-breaking rules to make the head-to-head series the means of determining any advantage. This rule alone should have prevented the creation of a new "post-season" game to create a final standing as the Goldpanners had a comfortable 5-2 season edge on the Pilots.." - General Relativity 9/1: 2002 FINAL, OFFICIAL Statistics 8/30: ABL Top Prospects: Ryan Schroyer (02) #3, Marc Kaiser (02) #4, Blake Gill (02) #6, Chad Corona (02) #7; Northwoods League: John Purdom (01) #7 "Voted the league's MVP because of his bat, Purdom has a strong arm but his other skills may not play behind the plate. Luckily for him, he has solid power and advanced hitting skills." - Allan Simpson 8/26: Many Happy Returns - Don Dennis "A side observation on Blake (Gill). He was cut out to be a Goldpanner. I have witnessed many pickups over the years and never before have I seen a guy become integrated the way it happened for Gill. By the third game of the tournament it seemed as though he had been with the team throughout the season. A tribute to Blake and the other Goldpanner players who welcomed him aboard."
8/14: Pandemonium 8/14: Panners Strike Pure Gold - ADN "To be honest with you," Anchorage coach Bob Miller replied when asked what happened, "I'm at a loss for words right now." "From the day we got here, we thought we might be seeing (the Pilots) tonight," Cheff said. "That's a really good club we had to beat twice here. Doing it the way we did it certainly makes it more special." 8/14: Memories of mom flood back for MVP Gill "Gill went 4 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Next thing he knew, he was holding the MVP trophy. "I never thought this would have happened, especially a few days ago," Gill said. "It's incredible. It's the best feeling I've ever had on a baseball field in my life." 8/14: Panners hit the Mother Lode - Bob Eley "The Panners have played in a record 12 championship games with four of those coming against the Glacier Pilots. The Panners now hold a 3-1 advantage in those games. The Pilots have played in 10 championship games." 8/14: Fairbanks Return Brightens NBC - Bob Lutz "Dennis, probably the most successful figure in NBC history, didn't join his team for a jubilant postgame celebration on the field. Instead, he remained stationed behind a camera above the bleachers behind third base, helping with the Fairbanks Web cast. Fairbanks has now played in 23 World Series, and won 26 percent of them. The Panners also have six second-place finishes, so they have played in the championship game in 52 percent of the tournaments they have entered." 8/14: Fairbanks wins record sixth title "The two teams had met three times before in the championship game, with Fairbanks now holding a 3-1 advantage." 8/14: NBC SPEAKCAST OF CHAMPIONSHIP GAME 8/11: SCORECAST vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 8/11: Its Pilots vs. Panners for the Title "This afternoon, they will take the field against the Goldpanners, who shared the Alaska Baseball League title with them. One game will not only decide this year's national champion, but since the organizations are tied with a record five NBC titles each, it will decide who is the most successful team in NBC history. 8/11: Panners Advance to Championship "We were run-ruling everyone, and we had to be reminded what this tournament would be like. But the way we've done it, we know we deserve to be in the championship." 8/11: Gill Golden for Fairbanks "I wasn't contributing like I felt I should have. I was really kind of taking it hard on myself," said Gill, a sophomore at Louisiana State. "It feels good to know that they can count on me when I'm up at the plate now. 8/11: Corona, Haag Make All-American Team 8/10: SCORECAST vs. Nevada Griffons 8/10: Tooth & Nail "If the Panners had lost to the Pilots, they would have been eliminated from the tournament. Instead, both teams will now play in the semifinals tonight with the Panners taking on the Nevada, Mo., Griffons at (7:30) p.m. ADT and the Pilots going up against the San Luis Obispo, Calif., Blues at (10 p.m.)" 8/10: Pilots Stumble Against Panners "Too crushed to even come out of the dugout for a postgame handshake with the Goldpanners, the Anchorage players and coaches waited for about 15 minutes as the All-Americans and other awards were announced." 8/9: Pilots now just two wins from retaining title "And it doesn't mean the Pilots would feel bad if they happened to be the team to send the Goldpanners packing. "Well," Zech said, "we'd talk a little garbage, I'm sure." 8/9: SCORECAST vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 8/9: Panners drop first in NBC series 8/7: SCORECAST vs. Wichita Braves 8/7: Goldpanners leading field with .404 average (44-for-109) ; Corona 3rd overall .667 (8-for-12) 8/7: Panners Struggle But Win 8/6: Panners, pitcher still perfect 8/6: Tim Montgomery (02) Two Home Runs in Win Over Prairie 8/5: SCORECAST vs. Prairie Gravel Illinois (NBC) 8/4: SCORECAST vs. San Luis Obisbo (NBC) 8/4: Chad Corona (02) 7-for-8 in Tournament 8/4: Panners sparkle like gold - Bob Eley "Mike Moat tossed a nifty four-hitter and his teammates pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of three Dallas Phillies errors en route to a resounding 10-0 victory in a game that was stopped in the bottom of the eighth inning on the tournament's travesty rule." 8/3: SCORECAST vs. Dallas Phillies (NBC) 8/3: Rodland heads All-Alaska Team 8/3: Panners make Tourney final 8/1: Added IF Blake Gill and LHP Roger Lincoln to 2002 Roster 8/1: 2002 All-Alaska Team - Sean Timmons - Starting Pitcher; Zak Basch - Relief Pitcher, Tony Perez, Scott Robinson - Outfielders, Ed Cheff - Coach of the Year 7/31: Goldpanners Beat AIA-AK 7-1 to go 5-0 in tourney. Advance to championship at 6pm on Thursday. No PANNERVISION or live SCORECAST until Wichita.. (due to travel demands). We're going strong, though.. Along with the Panners, the Pilots earned a berth in the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., where they will try to defend the championship that they won last year." 7/27: Pilots earn invitation to Wichita 7/27: Bucs defeat Goldpanners in 15 innings 7/26: SCORECAST - GAME SEVEN vs Anchorage Bucs 7/26: Goldpanners clinch ABL title 7/26: Panners clinch share of title 7/26: NBC Schedule - First game - 10:00 pm on the 3rd vs. Dallas Phillies 7/25: PANNERS WIN 2-1 IN 14 INNINGS WIN ABL TITLE! By Doyle Woody 7/23: 2002 Wood Bat Invitational Tournament 7/22: SCORECAST - GAME SEVEN vs. Kenai Oilers 7/22: Panners cycle into first "This is the first time I've ever hit for the cycle," said Montgomery. "Usually stuff like that only happens for me in wiffle ball games. But to do it for the first time as a Panner feels great, it's exciting. The win raises the Panners' consecutive win streak at Growden to (7) and, more importantly, moves them into first place in the Alaska Baseball League. They stand at 20-11 in the ABL, 25-14 overall." 7/22: Weaver weaves complete game 7/22: Montgomery wards off Oilers 7/21: SCORECAST - GAME SIX vs. Kenai Oilers Goldpanners in First Place! 7/21: Panners within reach of first "With just six days left in the regular season, the Panners (23-14 overall and 19-11 ABL) closed in on the Pilots (23-14, 20-11) and maintained a two-game lead over the surging Anchorage Bucs (20-17, 18-14)." 7/21: Huddy beats Pilots 7/20: SCORECAST - GAME FIVE vs. Kenai Oilers 7/20: Panners sweep Miners Richard Larson "The Alaska Goldpanners looked like a fine-tuned machine Friday at Growden Memorial Park, completing a four-game sweep of the Mat-Su Miners with a 4-1 victory. Chad Corona reached far over the fence to snare the ball, tumbling headfirst over the fence. Corona grabbed the chainlink with his bare hand and flipped himself over, keeping a hold of the ball as he landed on his feet after falling 6 feet to the cement floor of the dugout. " 7/20: Pilots extends streak to seven 7/19: SCORECAST - GAME FIVE vs. Mat Su Miners 7/19: Panners turn up pressure on Miners Richard Larson "We're trying to get runs. I think we've left the most guys on base in the league and being aggressive is just another way to try to get them in," said catcher Best, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored." 7/18: SCORECAST - GAME FOUR vs. Mat Su Miners 7/18: Panners shine at Growden 7/17: SCORECAST - GAME FOUR vs. Mat Su Miners 7/17: Sean Timmons (94-98-99-00-01-02) Tallies homestand win 7/16: SCORECAST - GAME THREE vs. Mat Su Miners 7/16: New Statistical Reporting 7/15: Surging Panners outlast Oilers "The Alaska Goldpanners worked overtime Sunday to inch closer to first place in the Alaska Baseball League Standings." 7/15: Panners keep Oilers in check 7/14: SCORECAST - GAME FOUR vs. Kenai Oilers 7/14: Panners fail Gagne again "The Panners have yet to score a run while the Notre Dame standout has been on the mound and that was the case again Saturday night in Kenai when Alaska went down to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Peninsula Oilers. The Panners are now 0-4 in games that Gagne has started even though the right-hander has an earned run average of about 2.00." 7/13: SCORECAST - GAME THREE vs. Kenai Oilers 7/12: SCORECAST - GAME TWO vs. Kenai Oilers 7/11: SCORECAST - GAME ONE vs. Kenai Oilers 7/11: Panners tied for second 7/10: SCORECAST - GAME FIVE vs Anchorage Bucs 7/10: Panners sweep into first "The Fairbanks hecklers were in full force at Growden Tuesday night, clearly irritating the visitors from Anchorage. Managers Bob Miller and Kristopher Didion were both ejected for arguing pitch calls by the home plate umpire." 7/10: Bucs survive bungles 7/9: Fairbanks baseball rules The three heavyweights in the Alaska Baseball League took turns getting their swings in on each other during a pair of tension-filled games Monday night at Growden Memorial Park. When the dust cleared the Fire and the Pilots stood tied atop the ABL standings with the Panners lurking just a half-game back. 7/9: Panners nudge Pilots 7/8: SCORECAST - GAME SIX vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 7/8: SCORECAST - GAME SEVEN vs AIA-ALASKA FIRE 7/8: Growden: Very Fairbanks "It was a drag bunt that worked," Ryan said. "That was fun. I like these fans, they are super and there are some good hecklers in there, too." 7/7: SCORECAST - GAME FIVE vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 7/7: Panners top Pilots 7/7: Mulcahy Stadium: Warts and all Matt Nevala "Mulcahy is named after Bill Mulcahy, an auditor for the Alaska Railroad who arrived in Anchorage in 1922 and later brought Little League to the area." 7/7: Seymour: Death to Long Ball Doyle Woody "While Seymour Park isn't homer friendly -- it is nonetheless much more attractive after $100,000 worth of work last fall included improvements all around the park." 7/6: SCORECAST - GAME FOUR vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 7/6: Chena growth and discharge - Big Rain! 7/6: Hermon Brothers: Perfect Ball Yard - Van Williams 7/4: Bucs beat Pilots 1-0 7/3: SCORECAST - GAME FOUR vs AIA-ALASKA FIRE 7/3: Panners, AIA opener postponed "Arndt said that there is a great deal of respect between these clubs, and if there is a cross-town rivalry, it is based more upon the intensity of the competitions rather than any animosity. "Our team respects the Goldpanners and what they stand for a great deal," he said. "You start with Don Dennis and their organization is outstanding from top to bottom. "Then you've got Cheff (Panners manager Ed Cheff); he's a legend in his own right" 7/3: Gero Von Dehn, The G-MAN (01-02) 7/3: Tim Estesen, The Field Guy (99-00-01-02) 7/2: Panners split double-header - Ryan Schroyer Rocks! 6/30: SCORECAST - GAME THREE vs Anchorage Bucs 6/30: SCORECAST - GAME FOUR vs Anchorage Bucs 6/30: Panners save Best for last 6/29: SCORECAST - GAME TWO vs Anchorage Bucs 6/29: Sean Timmons (94-98-99-00-01-02) Just what Cheff ordered 6/29: AIA movin' on up - beat Pilots 6/28: SCORECAST vs Anchorage Bucs 6/28: New Pictures 6/28: Panners Seymour Runs "He threw strikes and he threw low strikes," Pilots manager Bob Miller said. "And that's the first time we've had a look at that sidearm, submarine-type (pitching) angle." 6/27: SCORECAST - GAME THREE vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 6/27: Panners, Pilots hurlers locked in 6/26: SCORECAST - GAME TWO vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 6/26: New Pictures on Team Page 6/26: Panners lose lead - contest ; AIA outpitched by Bucs 6/25: SCORECAST - GAME ONE vs. Anchorage Glacier Pilots 6/25: Goldpanners exact revenge 6/24: SCORECAST - GAME THREE vs AIA-ALASKA FIRE 6/24: AIA Pitchers Standing Tall 6/23: SCORECAST - GAME TWO vs AIA-ALASKA FIRE 6/23: AIA Burns and Dons Smash Panners 6/22: SCORECAST 6/22-II vs AIA-ALASKA FIRE 6/22: SCORECAST 6/22-I vs UKIAH, CALIFORNIA DONS 6/22: SCORECAST 6/21 vs UKIAH, CALIFORNIA DONS 6/22: Midnight sun doesn't fail to make a showing - Richard Larson "Phil Blackwell, a pitcher on the Panners 1962-65 teams, threw out the first pitch, exactly 40 years after being the starting pitcher in the 1962 Midnight Sun Game... these guys have beautiful uniforms, while we had nice baggy ones. But the game was the same. We had 3 or 4,000 fans back then, too, and they were every bit as raucous as they are right now," Blackwell said as a roar came from the group of 80 thundering students from Marshall, Mich., packed into the far left-field stands. 6/22: A Boyhood Dream Comes True for Sean Timmons "the Alaska Goldpanners defeated the Ukiah Victory Dons 2-1 on a game-winning RBI single from Chad Corona in the bottom of the ninth inning. "I'm going to Alaskaland, baby!" joked Corona with his teammates during a jubilant celebration in front of the Panners' bench after Ryan Haag crossed the dish for the winning run.| GOLDPANNERS WIN 2-1 IN LAST AT-BAT - 3-STRAIGHT MSG LAST AT-BAT WINS 6/21: SCORECAST 6/21 vs UKIAH, CALIFORNIA DONS 6/21: Panners down Dons in Tuneup "We're starting to come together as a team," said right fielder Scott Robinson. "We're definitely working together well and we're doing the things we need to do to win games." Robinson went 2-for-3 from the plate and collected three RBIs in the contest. He also had a stolen base." 6/21: AIA loses league contest 6/20: SCORECAST 6/20 vs UKIAH, CALIFORNIA DONS 6/19: Panners lose to waves 6/18: SCORECAST 6/18 - GAME FOUR vs. Oceanside Waves 6/18: Sparkling day on the diamond - Bob Eley 6/17: SCORECAST 6/17 - GAME THREE vs. Oceanside Waves 6/17: Panners put on display "Shortstop Grant Rogers and right fielder Scott Robinson each went 3-for-5 in the contest to lead the Goldpanner offensive onslaught. Robinson doubled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Third baseman Brandon Averill and designated hitterpitcher Marc Kaiser each had two hits and drove in four runs. Averill connected for a two-run homer to cap the Panners' five-run eighth inning." 6/16: Waves beat Panners "This is a good fielding team and a good hitting team, and once we get everybody here it will be a strong pitching team, too," Timmons said. "I think it is good to get this out of the way now and hopefully this will help us get better for the league season. We still want to win, but you would rather lose now than in league." With new players arriving daily and only a couple of returning players from last season, Timmons said he was comfortable on the field, but still getting to know everybody in the dugout. "It's not really difficult (playing). My job is just to go out there and throw strikes," Timmons said. "Learning the guys' names is the hardest part. My first baseman and shortstop I get confused." 6/15: Scorecast vs. Waves 6/15: Panners solve All-Star puzzle - Richard Larson "Chad Redfern came in to pitch the seventh inning. "I haven't pitched in a game since I was about 10 years old," said Redfern, who normally roams the outfield for the Panners. "I had a couple of big league scouts that were interested in me throwing so I was hoping to use this summer to maybe develop my pitching. I was around the zone, I didn't have any balls hit the backstop, so I was pretty happy." 6/14: Scorecast vs. Fairbanks All-Stars 6/14: Goldpanners return to town for home opener - Richard Larson "I think it will be a fun time this summer," Corona said. "It's a bit of a climate change for me. I usually spend most of my time surfing. I had a brother up here two years ago and he did some fishing and told me it was really good up here. I haven't fished in about six years, but I'm looking forward to it." 6/13: AIA Still Hot; Panners lose first - Richard Larson 6/12: Scorecast vs. Mat Su Miners 6/12: Goldpanners Win Opener - Richard Larson "Mike Moat made an impressive debut for the Alaska Goldpanners, pitching one-hit ball over eight innings as the Panners opened their season with a solid 5-0 win over the Mat-Su Miners in Palmer on Tuesday. Haag was 2 for 4 with a run scored, Todd Jennings was 2 for 3 with a run scored, and Montgomery was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead the Panners at the plate." 6/12: Draft Signings - Ring, 1.6 Million 6/12: Foresters cut down AIA-AK - Bob Ely 6/11: Scorecast vs. Mat Su Miners - GAME 1 6/9: 2002 Panner Preview 6/6: Panners hope Cheff can cook up some victories "I enjoyed it there. I had a lot of fun and my wife likes Alaska in the summer. We both enjoyed our time up there," said Cheff.. "I have a lot of respect for (Panners GM) Don Dennis. He is one of the all-time great guys in amateur baseball. He is one of the guys.. that I have tremendous respect for, and is the main reason I am coming there." 6/6: AIA-AK Starts Season with California Swing 4/30: Goldpanners Celebrate 30th Anniversary of Championship Run 3/21: Jack O'Toole Passes
