WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS With a cool head and a hot hand, right-handed reliever Reid Hamblet pitched his way out of a ninth inning jam to preserve a one-run lead to pick up a win in his first appearance as a Goldpanner, and secured the Panners 3-2 victory Saturday night over the visiting Michigan Monarchs.
Hamblet came on in the sixth staked to a 2-1 lead, after starter Sean Timmons pitched five strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out four.
But after making short work of the Monarchs in the sixth, Hamblet surrendered the tying run in the next inning, when Monarchs first baseman Matt Moffat drove in left fielder Brendan Rosenbergh, batting in the nine slot, who led off the seventh with a single.
Hamblet bounced right back though, throwing a one-two-three inning in the eighth, and the Panners countered in their half of the inning, when second baseman Joe Persichina drove a hard-hit ground ball up the middle to bring catcher Brandon Morris home from third with what proved to be the game-winning RBI.
Rosenbergh led off again in the ninth for the Monarchs, and Hamblet gave him a free pass, but got the first out of the inning when Panners third baseman David Moore threw out the Monarchs center fielder Ryan Arnett, whose sacrifice bunt advanced Rosenbergh to second. Hamblet hit the next batter, shortstop Jason Watson; so with one out in the inning the had Monarch runners on first and second.
"I wasn't nervous," said Hamblet of that ninth inning, potentially nailbiting situation. "I was just rushing things too much."
Hamblet worked the count full on the next batter, Moffat; and then Goldpanners head coach Ed Cheff went out to the mound to give his pitcher a vote of confidence.
"Cheff came out and said, 'the pressure's on them,'" said Hamblet.. "He told me to slow things down and relax. I just needed one good pitch."
Hamblet made his pitch, and the left-handed hitter Moffat dribbled a weak ground ball to second that Persichina scooped up and fired over to Balmer at first for the second out.
Watson advanced to second, and Rosenbergh went to third on the sacrifice, bringing catcher Brad Hrovat to the plate. But Hamblet smartly slammed the door on any hope the Monarchs had of mounting another comeback, as he caught Hrovat looking on a called third strike, to end the game and keep the Panners perfect at 2-0 after their season-opening 4-1 win Friday over the Fairbanks All-Stars.
The second and final game of the series with the Monarchs is at 7 P.M. ADT Sunday at Growden.
