ARMAN SIDHU Shortstop AB R H RBI BB SO PO A LOB 4 0 2 2 1 1 4 10 0 |

WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNSInstinct can't be coached. A fielder's first step is often the difference maker between a spectacular stop and a ball that is too hot to handle. In the sixth inning of Sunday's contest with the Michigan Monarchs- an 8-1 Goldpanners victory in the second of a two-game series- Arman Sidhu, the Panners rangy shortstop, a 6-1 Northeastern University sophomore from Mississauga, Ontario, gave the crowd at Growden Park a perfect example of why coach Ed Cheff brought Sidhu north to help anchor the Goldpanners' middle infield.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Monarchs rightfielder Jim Duffy hit a rocket of a rising line drive off the Panners starting pitcher-and game winner- Brad Davis, but Sidhu stopped it, with a leaping outstretched catch to end the inning.
"I'm pretty confident on the field and I just react," said Sidhu, when asked about the catch. "My strength is defense."
Sidhu's also got a good arm, and he displayed that too in the sixth, when he made the long throw from the edge of the outfield to first baseman Brandon Morris for the first out of the inning.
"My arm has gotten a lot stronger this year with the workout program at school," said Sidhu. "And I'm confident throwing to the hole.".
Coach Cheff said after the game that with Davis on the mound, the Panners' infield knows what to expect.
"With Brad pitching you know you're going to get a lot of ground balls," said Cheff. "I like our middle infield with Arman and Jose (Castonon, the second baseman). We're really happy with Arman defensively and I think he can get better offensively too. We try to make guys better players and he's going to swing the bat better."
Cheff said that the coaching staff has been working with Sidhu on his swing and the effort is already paying off. In Sunday night's game, Sidhu went 2-4, with a base hit and a double, and drove in two runs.
"When I play well on the defensive end I hit better," said Sidhu. "I've been getting more confident swinging the bat in the five days since I've been here."
Sidhu isn't the only Goldpanner who's confidence at the plate is on the rise. Rightfielder Jordan Struble also drove in a pair of runs, and leftfielder Mike Lissman also went 2-4, with a base hit, a triple and one RBI, while Morris went 2-5 with a single and a double.
. The Goldpanners pounded out 11 hits in Sunday's contest- driving three Monarch pitchers from the mound - and Cheff said an increase in offense is something he expects to see from the entire team, as the players get comfortable with the wooden bats used in the Alaska Baseball League.
"I think the longer you swing a wood bat the better adjustments you make," said Cheff. "We do a lot of hitting off the T's and the pitching machine and a lot of pre-game drills. The offensive part is just going to get better as you go through the season." (Andy Sterns)
