WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS You can't miss the kids at Growden Park: the groups of young Goldpanner fans watching the games in the bleachers, and parading back and forth to the concession stands; and the young ball players, glove in hand, racing after foul balls and hoping that one day they'll be good enough to play for the hometown team.
A dozen years ago, Ryan Shaver was one of those kids on the other side of the fence. But now the lanky Lathrop High grad is a Goldpanner, and he made his first appearance for the team Monday night- pitching four innings of no-decision relief, in a tough 10th inning, 7-5 loss to the California Dons- in the first of a three-game series.
"It was tough to lose," said Shaver, who is now playing college ball at Lower Colombia for former Panner coach Rob Hippi, and was a pick of the San Francisco Giants in last Monday's Major League draft.
"But it was fun to play in a Goldpanners jersey," said Shaver. "This is a moment I'll remember for the rest of my life. I started coming to the games when I was about seven, and I look at these kids trying to get a foul ball from the players- that was me when I was seven."
With six strikeouts on the night-throwing a three-pitch mix of changeup, slider, fastball- Shaver gave the crowd plenty of reason to get excited about having another hometown hero- along with veteran ace starter Sean Timmons and rookie reliever Kinzey Reeves (Reeves and Shaver were teammates at Lathrop)- on the roster. But Shaver also gave up two runs, three hits and two walks, and wasn't satisfied that he had shown the Dons his best stuff.
"I was a little rusty today," said Shaver immediately after the game. "I haven't thrown in two weeks to hitters off the mound, since the college season ended. I've thrown in the bullpen, but it's not the same. My arm is at about eighty-five to ninety percent now, but by the time the regular season starts I'll be at 100 percent..
Shaver's return to peak form is right on schedule with the plan Goldpanners head coach Ed Cheff has for the entire team; to use these non-league contests to prepare the team for Alaska Baseball League play.
"The whole idea is to get ready for the league games," said Cheff Monday night. "Experimenting with the batting order, and seeing who can do what."
With new Goldpanner players still arriving into town - like Cal Northridge freshman Ray Ravago, whose first field appearance for the Panners was as a pinch hitter Monday in the bottom of the 10th inning- Cheff is in the process of evaluating the talent- and how best to use it in different situations- on his ever-growing roster.
"We didn't hit much tonight," said Cheff. "Pretty weak AB's (at bats). They pitched all right but we're going to have to hit that kind of pitching to compete in the league."
The Panners gave up two home runs in Monday night's game: the first a two-run shot by Dons DH Matt Lewis off Panners starter Jeff Stimpson in the fourth, the second a solo shot by center fielder Tristen Gale off Panners reliever Ricky Bostick in the ninth (the first homers of the season at Growden Park); and the Panners were out-hit by the Dons- but the Panners still led throughout most of the game- and were up by a run in the top of the ninth, when Gale's homer tied the game.
The Panners gave themselves one last good opportunity to win the ball game in the bottom of the ninth, when with runners on first and second, Allen Balmer singled, and Panners pinch hitter Joe Persichina made the turn at third, but Gale, with a strong and accurate throw from center, threw out Persichina at the plate with the potential game-winning run.
"We've still got four or five more non-league games to get better and be ready to play league games," said Cheff, emphasizing that; "This is a time for patience."
