When Goldpanners second baseman Jose Castenon and California Dons reliever Justin Driver squared off in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night, the only thing at stake was bragging rights. The Goldpanners were already leading the game 10-0, rebounding from their first and only loss of the season so far, in a game with the Dons the night before, and Driver was slated to pitch just a single inning to loosen up his arm. But Castanon and Driver, good friends and former teammates, both at Santa Ana College and last summer with the Dons, approached the matchup with the intensity befitting a game on the line.

"You're still 0-for-lifetime against me," Driver said to Castanon after the game, as the two continued their contest with a little trash talk in the parking lot outside the ballpark. Castanon countered though that he'd gotten good wood on a pitch from Driver that he hit hard to the Dons shortstop Jose Chavez, and Castanon reached first on a fielder's choice, when Chavez threw to Cory Skaggs at second for a force-out, and Skaggs was unable to turn the double play.

The Goldpanner who was thrown out at second was Trevor Mortenson, who Driver walked to lead off the inning. Mortenson is another Santa Ana and California Dons product (both teams are coached by former Goldpanner coach Don Sneddon), playing in his first game for the Goldpanners. Mortenson started the game in center field and batted in the leadoff spot, right ahead of Castenon.

"I feel more comfortable with Morty (Mortenson) up before me in the lineup," said Castanon. "It's the same as in College, the one-two punch."

Mortenson led the Orange Empire Conference with a .503 batting average and 13 home runs this spring and was named the conference Player of the Year, while Castenon hit .347 and was named to the All-Orange Conference team.

"I consider myself a contact hitter," said Castanon. "I don't usually strike out a lot."

Mortenson went 1-2, with a double and two walks against his former teammates on Tuesday, while Castanon was 2-6, with two singles and a walk, in the first two contests of this three-game series. Castanon has been in Fairbanks for less than a week but has already filled three roles for the Panners- at shortstop, second baseman and DH- in their first five games.

"If it's up to me I'd play shortstop," said Castanon. "But as long as I'm in the starting lineup I'm happy."

After Tuesday's game, Panners super-fan John Luther Adams came over to compliment Castanon on his play in the field.

"Some teams take a while to come together," Adams said to Castanon. "But right out of the gate you guys look like a team. It's great to see you and Arman (Sidhu) turn the double play."

Sidhu has been playing a lot of shortstop for the Goldpanners, but the recently arrived Ray Ravago got the start at short Tuesday, and he and Castenon didn't miss a beat, turning a nifty double play for the first two outs of the second inning. And Castanon said that with the caliber of new players like Ravago, who continue to arrive as their college seasons winds down, there is no break-in period required.

"It's just basically trying to teach him the signs and the style our coach wants to play," said Castanon. "This is a great group of guys. At this level we should be able to adjust."

The Panners continue to bolster their pitching staff, and added another left-hander to the roster Tuesday morning. Rollie (the name alone is worth a few strikeouts) Gibson is from Fresno City College- the same school Tom Seaver attended his freshman year before playing his first summer for the Goldpanners. Gibson got his first start for the club on the evening of his arrival in Fairbanks, pitching six innings of no-run, two-hit ball, backed by very solid defensive support, to pick up the win. Gibson had his fastball working early- and pitched to only nine batters in the first three innings- and he finished the same way, with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth. Jameson Hester, the starter and winning pitcher in the Panners season opener came on in relief in the seventh and closed out the game, allowing just two hit and preserving the shutout.

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
