The birthday boy hit a bomb. Goldpanners DH Paul Keck celebrated his twentieth in style, at home plate with his teammates, after hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning of the Panners 9-2 Wednesday night cakewalk over the California Dons. Keck's one-run triple in the sixth was the icing, as Keck finished 2-5 on the night, with 2 RBI.

In the three-game series with the Dons- the Panners took the last two after losing the opener- Keck went 6-11, with 4 RBI, and is understandably reluctant to acknowledge that he is really ripping it up at the plate.

"I've been seeing the ball real well," said Keck after Wednesday's game. "Up to the point I don't want to jinx myself. I finished my college season hitting really well and it's just carried over."

The big, 6-4, 205-pound right-handed hitter from Granada, CA, who was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 2003 MLB Draft, just finished his sophomore season at Chabot College, and will play for Panners head coach Ed Cheff next year at Lewis-Clark State.

At Chabot, Keck was the everyday starting catcher, but with the depth on the Goldpanners roster, Cheff can split the catching duties between Keck and Jordan Struble, who went 2-3 Wednesday, and made two tough catches on high, looping foul balls popped up behind the plate.

"We like Keck, we like Struble and we've got that guy from Florida, Jeroloman (another highly acclaimed catcher) coming," said Cheff. "It's a long season and we've got to get guys rested. Catching is tough, that's why we have three of them."

Keck said that when he was first slotted into the lineup as DH, he was concerned that not playing in the field might negatively affect his hitting.

"I thought it would, with so much downtime" said Keck. " But that hasn't really been a problem. You've just got to find something to do during the downtime. I'm usually going in there and catching (to warm up the pitcher between innings), picking up a bat and walking back and forth and talking to the other players about the game. Making sure I'm not focused on anything but the game."

Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
