| | 2004 Goldpanners Oceanside CA Waves vs Alaska Goldpanners (Jun 18, 2004)

WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNSGoldpanners rightfielder Johnny Coit's inning-ending diving catch in the fifth Friday night electrified the Growden crowd, and gave his team a much-need heart-pumping rush- keeping the Panners close in a game in which the crisp fielding and quick start at the plate that has characterized this year's team, was missing in action.
The Goldpanners were in a hole. The hometown team was down 2-0 in the top of the fifth to the California Waves Friday night. The Waves had already scored one run in the inning, and had two men on with two outs, when their catcher Will Craig hit a ball to short right field that looked sure to fall for a hit.
But with a good jump on the ball and standout speed, Coit ended the Waves threat to break the game wide open; and then Coit picked up his bat in the bottom of the inning and put the Panners back in business.
"We started off the game a bit dead," said Coit. "And we weren't seeing the ball very good, but then we picked it up and started to see it better."
Coit singled to reach base in the bottom of the fifth inning, and then his speed was once again the difference maker, as he scored easily- beating the throw from centerfield to the plate- on a two-out single up the middle by DH Joe Persichina.
"It gets my adrenaline rushing, and it livens me up," said Coit, when asked if a standout play in the field carries over to his performance at the plate. "Right now I'm just going up there with good intent, trying to get my timing down and trying to hit line drives and hard ground balls."
The Cal State Northridge freshman said he's still working on getting his game back on track after the break between the end of the college season and his first game with the Panners.
"The three weeks in between I didn't see any live pitching," said Coit. "And adjusting from metal to a wood bat is a big change. The sweet spot on wood is smaller than metal, but heavier to swing through the zone. The more I hit with wood the more I'll get used to it, and I prefer it. It's more of a pure swing. But I struggled a bit after that big break."
The Panners nearly gave the Waves one too many breaks of a different variety Friday, committing five errors; but outstanding fielding by Coit, right fielder Mike Lissman- who made a diving catch near the warning track of a ball hit deep and over his head in the eighth- and the steady glove work of shortstop Arman Sidhu, kept the Panners close, until they started to get some hits, and a few breaks of their own.
Panners catcher Paul Keck doubled in the sixth and scored the tying run on a wild pitch, then Lissman came across with the go-ahead run in the eighth, scoring from second on an Allen Balmer bunt and a Craig error on the throw to first. First baseman David Moore, who entered the game for an injured Brandon Morris (Morris wrenched his knee rounding third when the Panners threatened, but didn't score in the second), drove in Keck for an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly, to set up the final 4-2 score.
Closer Ryan Shaver, with that big defensive boost from Lissman in the eighth, set the Waves down in order in the both the eighth and ninth, and picked up his first win for the Panners.

V/R Bill & Tammy Madigan, Parents of Austin & Dakota Madigan "Just wanted to send pictures of the clinic held by Coach Strankman, Kyle Bowers, & Joe Persichina on June 18th for the Fairbanks T-ballers. The kids really enjoyed the time they spent learning some of the basics of baseball. It is great to see they take time out of their day to spend with these kids. Many thanks go out to them. " |
