| | 2004 Goldpanners Oceanside CA Waves vs Alaska Goldpanners (Jun 19, 2004)

WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS The Panners nearly let the Waves run away with a win. After coming back from a 2-0 deficit Friday -in the first of a three-game series with Oceanside- to post a 4-2 win, the Goldpanners found themselves in even more dire straits early in Saturday's game, down 4-0, after the Waves racked up four runs in the top of the second.
The first inning was a fast one, as both starting pitchers, the Panners Brad Davis and the Waves Brett Gillespie, each set down the side in order, and the pace of the game indicated that perhaps a pitching duel was in the offing.
But the character of the game changed quickly by the next inning, as the Waves scored four runs on three hits, (Davis also hit two batters); and the contest evolved into a long (three hours-plus) high scoring (both teams combined for 17 runs) affair, as the Panners pulled off a wild 11-6 win.
"I didn't come in feeling that great," said Davis, who pitched 5 and 2/3 innings, leaving the game with the Panners down 5-4, relieved by Ricky Bostick, who pitched the final 3 1/3, and picked up the win.
" I didn't have that feeling that I usually have," said Davis. "I was dragging my arm a little and floating some pitches in there. I didn't have much control. I struggled the whole game, but the defense helped a lot and got me out of a couple jams."
Davis contributed with his own heads up defensive play, slamming the door on the Waves second inning with a nifty, third-out, second base pick-off.
The Panners quickly got a couple of breaks from Gillespie in their half of the second: he hit catcher Jordan Struble with a pitch and walked second baseman Jose Castanon. That brought shortstop Ray Ravago to the plate with a great opportunity to capitalize on Gillespie's mistakes and cut a chunk out of the Waves big lead.
Ravago delivered, lining a two-run base hit up the middle, to reel the Waves back into striking range. The Panners tied the game an inning later, and while the Waves countered, taking a 5-4 lead in the fifth, the Panners opened the floodgates in the sixth, scoring four runs, and then put the ball in Bostick's hands, and he allowed just a single run in the eighth.
"Getting ground balls and letting my defense do the work," is how Bostick described his pitching strategy. " I just had to go out there and be mentally tough, and we had to keep battling."
Ravago said after the game that with a three week break between the end of his freshman season at Cal Northridge and his first games with Panners, he isn't back up to speed yet swinging the bat. But he got enough on that big second-inning hit to kept the Panners close enough early on to fight that battle.
"I'm still trying to get adjusted back to live pitching," said Ravago. "I'm still getting back on track with my hitting."
Ravago's first appearance for the Panners was a potentially nerve-rattling one- as a bottom of the tenth inning pinch hitter- in a tie game with the California Dons, on the same day that he stepped off the plane in Fairbanks. But Ravago said he was unfazed by the experience.
"I didn't feel any pressure," he said. "It was my first at bat in three weeks."
In addition to working on getting the timing of his hitting down, Ravago, who provided some of that strong defense Saturday night that both Davis and Bostick depend on, said he is still adjusting to the infield surface at Growden Park.
"The timing was off," said Ravago. "This infield is a big difference, with the turf, from what I'm used to, so I'm still getting adjusted to that."
But as far as the need to make any adjustments or get used to working with the other members of the Goldpanner infield goes, there aren't any.
"They know what they're doing and I know what I'm doing," said Ravago. "We work well together."
