WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS"I didn't really know what to expect when I came up, but the guys are great. It's better than I could have wished for."
The Cardinal was racking up the K's. Stanford freshman Jeff Stimpson, in his second start for the Goldpanners, recorded eight strikeouts- pitching seven innings of five-hit, shutout ball Sunday afternoon, as the Panners completed a three-game sweep of the Oceanside Waves.
Temperatures for the 2 P.M. contest were in the mid-80's, under a hot sun and skies filled with haze from distant wildfires, but Stimpson kept the opposition on ice; allowing only eight Waves to reach base, on two walks, the five hits and a single error. Derrick Landavaso took the mound for the Panners in the top of the eighth, and gave up a leadoff double and a walk, but kept the shutout intact, and closed out the 7-0 win.
Shortstop Arman Sidhu and centerfielder Trevor Mortenson wielded the hottest Goldpanner bats on Sunday: Sidhu went 2-5, scoring two runs, and Mortenson went 2-5, with two RBI; while catcher Paul Keck continued his hitting streak-now at seven games- with a base hit in the sixth.
"This is a good day to hit," said Sidhu, a defensive ace, who obviously doesn't mind playing in the heat, and is enjoying the payoff from the extra time he has put into working on his swing.
"I've been taking a lot of batting practice," said Sidu. "And getting a lot of help from the coaches. I'm feeling good at the plate."
Stimpson was a reliever this year at Stanford, relying primarily on his fastball; but said that Sunday he threw a fastball, changeup, curveball combination- and had good control of all three pitches.
"I felt great," said Stimpson, after the game. "I felt like I had all of my pitches working well and I was locating my pitches well."
Stimpson said he tired slightly in the seventh, giving up consecutive base hits to the first two batters he faced, but then he buckled down, quickly retiring the next three to end the inning and keep the Waves off the board.
"Towards the sixth and seventh inning I didn't have my best stuff," said Stimpson. "They were starting to hit it and I was getting a little bit fatigued."
Sunday's outing was an improvement over Stimpson first start for the Panners, against the California Dons, when Stimpson pitched four innings, and gave up three base hits, a double and a two-run home run.
"I had a week or two off (after the college season), said Stimpson. "So I wasn't in top shape. I'm still getting my arm back into shape and working to get my endurance up so I can fit into the starter's role here. I didn't really know what to expect when I came up, but the guys are great. It's better than I could have wished for." | | | | |
