WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS

"The crowd was going crazy"

Allen Balmer's game-winning, one-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth closed a chaotic final inning in a wild night of baseball Thursday.  His total effort yielded a three-RBI outing as the Panners defeated AIA 9-8, to win their Alaska League opener.

Both starting pitchers, the Panners' Carlos Fisher and the AIA's Caleb Irwin, kept the opposition in check early -- Fisher allowed just a single Fire run through five, and Irwin was throwing a shutout. But then the floodgates opened and the bullpen parade began: the Panners scored four runs in the sixth, and three in the seventh, and the Fire added their own three in the seventh, and four more in the eighth.

The ninth inning began with the Panners down 8-7, and reliever Brett Andrade on the mound. Andrade had entered the game in the eighth- with two outs and one man on base- after the Fire's four-run flurry- but he quickly ended the half-inning with a strikeout. The Panners couldn't get anything going in their half of the eighth, but after Andrade shut the Fire down again in the ninth, the Panners comeback hopes were kept alive.

DH Cameron Blair - playing in his first game for the Goldpanners - singled off of Fire closer Ricky Sparks to start the home-half of the ninth. Then right fielder Jordan Struble, who had already scored once and driven in two runs, bunted down the first base line to advance Cameron, but on his way to first, Struble collided with AIA second baseman Tim Murphy, who was covering the bag. Murphy collapsed to the turf in a howl of pain, and a long, confusing, controversy-filled time-out ensued.

Struble remained planted on first- it was unclear whether or not the field umpire had called him out- while Blair appeared to be safe at third. After a quick huddle though, the umpires called Blair back to second, and Goldpanner Manager Ed Cheff marched onto the infield, then followed the field umpire into the outfield- presumably seeking a clarification or arguing the call- before the home plate ump, after trying unsuccessfully to get Cheff to return to the sidelines, ejected Cheff from the game.

When the timeout finally ended, Struble took off his batting helmet and headed back to the dugout- the first out of the inning-and Cameron remained on second.

"I didn't try to hurt him or hit him," said Struble, of the play at first base. "The ump thought it was interference on me, but we thought I was safe. He didn't really have control of the ball and he wasn't on the bag. We thought (Blair) should have been to third - no timeout was called. But supposedly the ump called time."

After the lengthy delay, first baseman Joe Persichina came to the plate.

"I was just staying warm and taking a couple of practice swings," said Persichina, on how he passed the timeout. "The crowd was going crazy, but I just try to stay calm and keep my composure when I get in the box, no matter what the situation is."

Persichina, who finished 2-4 on the night and had already scored twice, driven in two runs and tripled in the sixth, lined a shot into right field, and stretched it into a double, driving in Blair with the tying run.

"I was going to try to hit a ball to the right side in the gap," said Persichina. "As soon as I hit it I was thinking, "I can take a double. Go for it." I was taking a little risk there but I felt pretty quick. I was feeling good around the bases. If I'm safe I'm in scoring position, but if I stay at first, a base hit won't drive me in."

Balmer was the next batter and he made Persichina's gamble pay off.

"I wasn't really thinking about all that," said Balmer, when asked if either the game delay or his manager's ejection affected his mind set in that last at-bat. "I just wanted to get a hit and drive in a run, and I flared one out to the left Sometimes good things just happen."

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

6/21/06 @ Midnight

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
