WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNSThe difference is undeniable.
"When you're seeing the ball good it's looking like a beach ball or a melon," said Cameron Blair, the Panners latest roster pickup and a senior out of Texas Tech. "But when you're seeing it bad it's looking like a BB or a piece of rice."
Friday was definitely a melon day- and make that a watermelon- for Blair.
The second baseman was positively lethal at the plate Friday night, in the Goldpanners 13-8 victory over the Athletes in Action Fire, the Panners second straight win in a three-game set to open their Alaska Baseball League play.
Blair hit a grand slam over the left field fence in the second inning, off starter Jeff Hanson, and followed it with a two-run shot to nearly the same spot in the seventh, off reliever Andy Plemmons.
"It's a matter of seeing pitches," said Blair. "When a guy comes in throwing a lot of balls, you can just wait for a good pitch because you know he's got to throw one in there."
Blair filled the DH slot Thursday in his first game with the Goldpanners- and got a base hit- but he said there was a big difference in how he felt at the plate in that first game .
"Yesterday (Thursday) I was a little rusty," said Blair, whose first at-bat for the Goldpanners followed a two-week break from facing live pitching, after the end of his college season. "I felt like my hands were lagging and the ball looked a lot smaller. Yesterday (Thursday) with every pitch the ball was looking smaller and smaller."
Blair wielded the biggest bat for the team on Friday, finishing the night at 2-5, with six RBI, but he wasn't the only Goldpanner seeing more beach balls than BBs.
Every batter in the lineup got a hit- for a total of 14. Left fielder Mike Lissman and right fielder Johnny Coit both went 2-4, with 2 RBI; DH Paul Keck and first baseman Joe Persichina each picked up a couple of hits, and Persichina, catcher Jordan Struble and shortstop Ray Ravago all drove in runs to provide Panners starter Rollie Gibson and reliever Ricky Bostick with a juggernaut of offensive support.
"My defense worked really good behind me," said Gibson, who picked up his second win of the season; pitching 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits, with four walks and four strikeouts.
Just like on the offensive end, the Panners spread the wealth on defense too, with outstanding play around the diamond. Blair made a great backhanded stab of a hard hit ground ball to second-his first play in the field for the Goldpanners- and fired over to Persichina for the first out in the bottom of the first inning; Coit made a spectacular shoestring catch in right, after momentarily losing the ball in the sun, for the third out in the sixth, and third baseman Allen Balmer timed the high hop perfectly and made a long, strong throw to first to end the Fire's seventh.
"I didn't have really good stuff," Gibson added. " But that's when you have to try harder and try to stay more focused. You've just got to compete more." | | | | |
