WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS

If James Brown wasn't the godfather of soul, but was a ballplayer instead, he'd feel right at home in the Goldpanners dugout. The "hardest working man in show business" would appreciate the extra effort the Panners put in everyday to improve their game; and the overtime payoff is an early lead in Alaska Baseball League standings- after the Panners completed a sweep of their league- opening three-game series with the Athletes in Action Fire.

Before games, the Panners run and stretch to warm up, and take batting and fielding practice, but it's after games, when the work ethic head coach
Ed Cheff and his staff instill in their squad is most evident. After a long, hot stint at the ballpark it would be easy to just call it a night, and go out to dinner, but instead the players line up to run wind sprints and do sit-ups, and the coaches work with pitchers throwing in the bullpen. And after their post-game work, some of the Goldpanners head into the weight room for more.

"We spend more time on conditioning and it's helped us in the past," said Cheff. "Our guys are thinking of playing in Wichita (at the National Baseball Congress Championships) in August. It's a long season so what you do in June and July is important to keep these guys in good shape."

But before beginning the post-game workout following their 3-1 win over the Fire Saturday night, the Panners first congratulated, with handshakes and hugs, the team's genuine working man, their right-handed ace
Sean Timmons, who had just pitched a complete game to send his teammates off undefeated in league play, on the first road trip of the season.

Timmons will stay in Fairbanks because he's really got some work to do- the 2003 ABL Player of the Year is a full-time phlebotomist at the Tanana Valley Clinic- and it's Timmons' workmanlike approach to pitching that prevented any letdown on Saturday; when he took the mound in front of a much smaller and quieter crowd than the cheering 3,500 solstice celebrants who watched him pick up the win in his previous start in Monday's Midnight Sun Game.

"I keep my focus on the pitching," said Timmons, when asked if he was affected by the big change in atmosphere at Growden Park between the two starts. "I just go out there and throw strikes. I still have a job to do."

Timmons surrendered 11 hits, but just that single run, a homer hit by AIA right fielder Timothy Edmeads in the top of the fifth.

"He hit a mistake," said Timmons. "You've got to give him credit, but it's only one run. You just limit the damage and keep going. "

Timmons said that his pitches were working better for him as the game wore on, and that he's pitching more effectively with every start.

"I felt pretty good out there," said Timmons. "I think I'm getting better every game. I got my slider back tonight and I'm starting to use it a little more. I picked up the pace with it and the last three or four innings I was getting more aggressive with it."

Timmons' outing was the first complete game by a Panner pitcher this season.

"I think I usually get one or two (complete games) a year," said Timmons. "If I feel good I think Cheff's going to leave me out there."

Timmons never got into too much trouble the entire game, and good defensive support got him out of a couple of jams, when the Fire threatened to score with runners on base. Timmons gave up three bases hits and loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but shortstop
Arman Sidhu caught a rocket of a low line drive to end that threat; and third baseman Allen Balmer backhanded a hard hit ground ball in the fifth, with Fire on first and second, and made a strong throw to Joe Persichina at first for the third out of the inning. Timmons and Sidhu teamed to end the third inning when Timmons threw to Sidhu, covering second, and picked off Fire centerfielder Scott Rooker.

"That wasn't my call," said Timmons, of the decision to make the throw. "It was Arman's, and a good call by him"

The Panners tagged AIA starter Michael Penn for just four base hits in six innings, but turned two of them into runs to give Timmons all the cushion he needed. The Panners leadoff hitter, centerfielder
Trevor Mortensen, singled in his first at-bat, stole second, took third on an infield groundout, and scored on a passed ball.

In the fourth, Panners second baseman
Cameron Blair, who finished 2-4 on the night, took advantage of two passed balls, to take second and third, after he singled to get on base, and scored on a Paul Keck sacrifice fly.

Keck picked up his second RBI of the night in the seventh, when he drilled a pitch from reliever Logan Boutilier over the left field fence; and while Keck has been the most dangerous Goldpanner at the plate so far this season, the Fire kept him in check in the first two games of the series- only because they kept hitting him with pitches.

"They think that we're giving signs," said Cheff, explaining why AIA kept throwing at Keck. "They were trying to make a statement."

Keck was hit by pitches twice in each of the first two games of the series- and each time Keck just dropped his bat and ran to first; he didn't yell or gesture at the pitchers- so on Saturday, when the Fire finally pitched him fairly, Keck simply responded with a statement of his own.

2006 MIDNIGHT SUN GAME
100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

6/21/06 @ Midnight

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
