WRITTEN BY TODD DENNIS

The 2004 Goldpanners were riding a nine game winning streak coming into their first road game of the season.  Starting pitcher Jeff Stimpson pitched sharp, though an error by second baseman Jose Castanon brought in an early run.  The bats took a little time to warm up, but right fielder Johnny Coit provided punch in the third inning by doubling in Trevor Mortensen, who had walked -- and is making a career with the Panners by watching pitches, waiting, and walking.

The big blast of the day came from DH Paul Keck.  His clout over the left field fence was a missile.  Good thing his bat is coming back, we've missed it.

Another big day was had by Cameron Blair.  Every day, the Saint Louis organization sweats out their negotiations with Cameron, watching him do everything on the field you could ever ask of a player.  Blair provided crisp defense, starting and finishing each play with the flair of a major leaguer.  At this point in the season, he is the man the whole team sees as the prime mover... the type of player that lifts the level of everyone else on the club, al a Ryan Schroyer or Emerson Frostad.

With the score 2-1 Goldpanners heading into the sixth, another error provided yet another run for the Pilots.  A single and the errant play by Mortensen knocked Stimpson out of the game and brought Kenny Marquis in.  Bringing instant relief, Kenny fanned Pilots right fielder Scott Bradley to end the inning and the threat of a go-ahead run.   Though at times brilliant on the mound, Kenny shows lapses in concentration, evidenced by a walk to catcher Jon Still and then a first-pitch blast over the left field fence by Derek Shermerhorn.

The Goldpanners answered by manufacturing two runs in the eighth, when Pilots reliever Daniel Miltenberger suddenly lost his control.  With two men on, second year Pilot Adam Simon induced Jose Castanon into an inning-ending double play.

The emotional high carried into the ninth, when even relief ace Brett Andrade could not withstand the Anchorage determination to win.  A single by leadoff hitter Matt Baty was followed by a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Brandon Godfrey.  This put Baty on second, who advanced to third as the result of very scrupulous at bats by the following two batters, who managed to walk.  A sac fly by Shermerhorn sealed the deal, and the Panners realized their first league loss of the season.

No big deal, we'll get 'em tomorrow.

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
