WRITTEN BY TODD DENNIS

Coming off of a devastating sweep in Kenai by the Oilers, the Panners were in need of a big win.  This was especially true considering the cancellation of the Mat-Su series in Fairbanks due to smoke.  The team was facing two days off and a long bus ride back to Fairbanks, and wanted to be on the upswing during that time.

Head coach Ed Cheff surely just wanted his team to dig deep, pull together and manufacture a win, no matter what it took.   Cheff shuffled the lineup around, making hot-hitting Cameron Blair the leadoff hitter.  He also rested Trevor Mortensen, who had been struggling in the leadoff position.

Blair brought instant returns, leading off the ballgame with a double.  As quiet as the bats were in Kenai, this appeared to be the start of something new.  Unfortunately, the next three batters were retired in a row.

The Panners managed a run in the third and another in the fourth, while maintaining shutout ball from the mound thanks to the fine effort of first-time starter Kenny Maiques.  His pitches were well-placed and effective against the Glacier Pilots bats.  Only a strict three-inning limit was able to remove him from the game.

Reliever Derrick Landavazo was not as effective on this day, and after allowing one run in the fourth, allowed another in the fifth.  He plunked two batters in a row, and was removed immediately after nearly hitting the following batter.  Jeff Stimpson pitched effectively, yet an error by third baseman Allen Balmer allowed a run to score. tying the game at two apiece.

Both teams were held scoreless for two innings, which increased the tension on the field, as well as in the stands.

The Panners had another fine opportunity in the top of the eighth inning, when started Rick Rivas was replaced by Madden.  Arman Sidhu led off the inning with a walk, which brought Cameron Blair to the plate.     With two strikes as a result of two failed sacrifices, Blair popped out to the Pilots' shortstop Tito Cruz, who afterward threw wildly to first, allowing Sidhu to advance to second.  Johnny Coit singled Arman to third, but Balmer flied out and Coit was caught stealing on a broken play.

PannerVision announcer Gero von Dehn immediately noted the foreboding feeling that the Pilots would seize upon this failed opportunity in the bottom of the eight to put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning.

And so they did, after a series of hits and walks, giving them a three run lead going into the final frame.  Though Brian Jeroloman doubled to lead off the inning, the final three batters were retired to send the Goldpanners into their longest break of the season on a four-game losing streak.

The Panners have lost five out of their last six, and have dropped beneath .500 in the Alaska League.   The coming homestand in Fairbanks, which is now slated to begin on Tuesday evening against the Anchorage Bucs, will make or break the 2004 campaign.   Though by no means out of the race (with all other teams sporting similar loss counts), the club will have to get past all of the losses and focus entirely on the games at hand.

Hopefully, a weekend in Anchorage with no games to play was just the medicine needed.

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
