"I love this town"

Sean Timmons was having trouble again with smoke. No, it wasn?t the wildfire smoke that was blowing into Fairbanks all last week (where Timmons was stuck because of his work at the Tanana Valley Clinic, while his teammates were playing on the road) that was the source of his problem- it was the smoke he was throwing - his fastball- that got him into trouble early in the Panners Tuesday night game against the Anchorage Bucs.

"I stuck with the fastball early," said Timmons. "But they were hitting it."

The thick, brown fog from the fires had made it impossible for Timmons to work out since his last start, but Timmons-never one to make excuses, even in such an unusual situation- wasn't willing to tie his shaky start Tuesday- he uncharacteristically gave up five hits and two runs in the first three innings- to that lack of training.

"I didn't get to run or throw for a week," said Timmons after Tuesday's game. "Usually every day I'd do some kind of running or throwing, my normal routine. But I threw yesterday for the first time in a week."

It took only those first three innings though- in the first of a four game set with the Bucs- for Timmons and his Goldpanner teammates to reestablish what has come to pass as normalcy this season at Growden- Timmons mowing down the opposition while backed by tremendous run support from the rest of the squad.

The Goldpanner bats came back to life Tuesday night in the bottom of the third inning, when they scored three runs on three hits, and that set the tone for the rest of the game. The Panners erupted for 11 more hits in securing a solid 12-3 victory, that snapped a four game losing streak and put the Panners just two games back of the league-leading Mat-Su Miners, who will be in Fairbanks this weekend to play the Goldpanners in a make-up of their smoke-postponed July 4th-weekend series.

Timmons' catcher for the night, Brian Jeroloman, helped his battery mate both behind, and at the plate- Jeroloman connected for a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, in his first at-bat at Growden Park to put the Panners ahead 4-2.

"The first pitch was a slider in the dirt," said Jeroloman. "I was sitting for a fastball and he left it up a bit."

Jeroloman, who just finished his freshman year at the University of Florida, met up with the team last week in Anchorage and joined them on that ill-fated road trip; but when he finally got to play in Fairbanks, it didn't take him long to appreciate Growden Park and the home crowd.

"This is a great place to play," said Jeroloman. "It's a great environment and I've got great teammates; they're there for you. I'm not gonna lie, I love this town now. The road is a hard place to play, but we came back with fresh legs and we were pumped up to play today and give it all we got. That's what we did."

Tuesday's game was their first working together, but Timmons and Jeroloman both said they made an instant connection.

"He's a great catcher," said Timmons. "We clicked right away. I don't think I shook him off but twice."

"You don't have a lot of work to do catching a kid like that," said Jeroloman of Timmons. "He can really hit his spots, and the way he pitches, he gets himself out of trouble. He's a great pitcher."

"Maybe," was the only concession Timmons was willing to make when asked if the interruption of his running and throwing routine contributed to his relatively rocky start. "But I think it was the way we started off. They were hitting the fastball early so we started throwing more sliders, and started throwing the slider earlier in the count and got a lot of routine ground balls. We started setting up the pitches better and they didn't adjust quick enough."

Timmons has carved his career out of keeping hitters off balance- they usually never quite catch up to the adjustments he makes to keep them guessing- and Tuesday Timmons settled down after the first three innings- he allowed only three hits over the next six- to pitch his second complete game of the season, and record his 25th win as a Goldpanner; tying 1960's-era Panner pitcher George "Muggs" Mies for most wins career wins with the team.

"Tying him is a great thing," said Timmons. "It's pretty neat. His (record) has been there for a long time. I'm hoping mine will be too."

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

6/21/06 @ Midnight

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
