Consider two tough situations for a centerfielder to find himself in: the first is in a slump, but while the team is on a tear (winning 11 of its first 12 games); and of course that ballplayer is first and foremost just happy that the team is wining, but even so, everyone on the team still wants to contribute to the winning cause and play as well as possible.

The second, and even more difficult situation, is when that same ballplayer really turns it around at the plate, and starts hitting on a streak; while at the same time the team begins to find the wins much harder to come by.

"I'd much rather go 'oh-for' and have the team win," said Goldpanner centerfielder and leadoff hitter Trevor Mortenson, after Wednesday's game against the Anchorage Bucs.

The result was a tough 6-3 loss for the Goldpanners, in a game in which the Panners led through the sixth inning, and on a windy night when Mortenson held the hottest bat for the team and finished 4-5 at the plate.

"It's kind of a double standard," said Mortenson. "I'm starting to bat now, but the team's not winning."

Immediately after the team wrapped up a win a week and a half ago in the final game of their first home stand - the Goldpanners ninth win in a row- Mortenson went into the coaches' office to study videotape of his swing. He had gotten only seven hits in those nine games, and the slugger from Santa Ana College, who led the Orange Empire Conference this Spring in batting average, hitting .503, and in home runs, with 13, was trying to identify the reasons why he wasn't performing up to his usual standard at the plate.

"Every good hitter goes through a slump," Panners head coach Ed Cheff told Mortenson after Mortenson had finished watching the tape. Cheff then gave Mortenson some suggestions how to work out some things that he'd noticed about Mortenson's swing; and the coach took a batter's stance to demonstrate a few key points.

And through the difficult 1-4 road trip, and a split of the first two of this four-game series with the Bucs, Mortenson kept working.

"Me and coach Cheff, we went into the cage and changed my hands for a better grip," said Mortenson. "There was a timing issue with my front foot, I was doing something kind of loopy. But it's starting to come together."

"Starting" to come together is an understatement, because Mortenson is already hitting the ball extremely well, but he was understandably down after Wednesday night's loss.

Mortenson was the only Goldpanner who was able to consistently solve Bucs starting pitcher Garrett Olson, and Mortenson got the Panners off to a hot start, when he led off the bottom of the first with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error by Olson, and scored on an RBI single by catcher Paul Keck.

Olson allowed two runs on four hits in the first inning (DH Brian Jeroloman and rightfielder Jordan Struble also singled, and Jeroloman scored on Struble's hit); and Olson allowed one run on four walks and a Mortenson single in a shaky seventh; but other than that, Olson was lights out- after the first inning he didn't give up a hit to anyone but Mortenson over the next seven.

Bucs closer Jon Wilson came on to relieve Olson in the ninth, and Mortenson was the only Goldpanner to get a hit off of Wilson.

"This is a game of inches," said Mortenson, reflecting on both his turnaround at the plate and the fortunes of his team . "And every day is a new day. I don't get down on myself, and when you're not hitting or you're not winning the only place to go is up."

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
