The Goldpanners are grinning again.

After pulling out an 8-7 bottom-of-the-ninth- inning victory-in a thrill ride of a game against the Anchorage Bucs at Growden Park Thursday night- the big smiles, banter and good-natured ribbing among teammates returned to the home team dugout following the win; a huge and welcome contrast to the quiet frustration and grim faces that filled the same dugout just the night before; when the Panners suffered a tough loss (bested 6-3 by the Bucs) to fall below .500 in Alaska Baseball League play.

"This game was huge," said Goldpanner third baseman Allen Balmer, whose ninth inning sacrifice fly drove in the Panners versatile player-coach Elliot Strankman (who was pinch running for catcher
Brian Jeroloman) from third for the winning run.

Jeroloman singled to lead off the ninth inning rally, and DH Paul Keck followed with his second base hit of the night, to advance the head first-sliding Strankman to third.

"We needed this one big time," said Balmer. "Now we're back at .500 and we can get in a position to fight for first place."

That first-place fight will really heat up this weekend. After one more game against the Bucs on Friday, the league-leading Mat-Su Miners, who are 2 ½ games up on the Panners, will be in town to play a smoke-postponed three game series with the Panners.

The local young gun, reliever Ryan Shaver, pitched the final two innings and picked up the win in Thursday night's game; after he came in for starter Jeff Stimpson, who pitched seven complete innings, and left the game with the Panners down a run, 6-5.

Stimpson's performance was positively heroic, on a night when he knew he didn't have his best stuff, but battled his way through seven tough innings against a potent Bucs offense to keep the Panners in the game.

"I really had trouble with my control," said Stimpson, who issued nine walks and eight hits, including a three-run homer by Bucs catcher-head coach Matt Priess. "I would just try to throw strikes and let them put the ball in play and get a lot of double plays."

Which the Panners did, by turning double plays to end the Bucs first, fifth, sixth, and ninth inning at-bats.

"At first I was nervous, coming into such a close game," said Shaver, who was relaxing with friends in the bleachers after his efforts. "I think it was just the case that I hadn't pitched in a while. But I love these tight situations; someone always pulls through for me in the end. I was just super happy to see that we get a win. My team really picked me up."

Shaver faced only three Bucs batters in the eighth inning, and although their DH Greg Kish reached base on an error by shortstop Ray Ravago, (an error that only a speedy shortstop can make; otherwise the ball is through the hole for a hit) the Panners cannon-armed catcher Jeroloman caught Kish trying to steal second, for the third out of the inning.

Pinch hitter Jordan Struble's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth tied the game, scoring leftfielder Mike Lissman, who doubled to lead off the inning; and rightfielder Johnny Coit doubled in the go-ahead run, scoring first baseman Joe Persichina.

"It's the toughest thing to come in late in the game as a pinch hitter," said Struble. "But with no outs the odds are in your favor."

And Struble knew he just needed to get the ball out of the infield.

"Your mentality is a little different than when you're trying to get a hit," said Struble. "You mostly need to stay off the ball inside, back up off the plate, and just elevate the ball."

Shaver gave up one hit in the ninth, a single by Bucs leftfielder Brandon Roberts; and Roberts was bunted over to second, stole third and scored on an error by Panners second baseman Cameron Blair on a ball hit by Bucs slugger Isaac Omura.

But Blair more than made up for that rare miscue in the field, when he picked up a hard hit ground ball to begin the turn of a 4-6-3 double play that ended the Bucs-half of the inning with the game evened-up for the Panners last at-bat.

Blair was wearing one of the biggest smiles after the game; and his contribution on the night was equally as large: he scored two runs, singed and doubled to finish 2-3 at the plate, and terrorized the Bucs on the basepaths, with three stole three bases.

Lissman and Persichina, whose eighth inning hits started the rally that got the Panners back in the game, were beaming too, after a night in which the team won, and they both broke out of a long funk at the plate.

"It's extremely frustrating when you're not hitting the ball," said Persichina. "You've got to buckle down and be tough, and realize, 'You're good and you're here for a reason. You're a ballplayer.' It feels good to get a hit and it feels great to help the team."

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
