Alaska Goldpanners 7, Anchorage Bucs 4 (Jul 09, 2004 at Fairbanks) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anchorage Bucs...... 000 002 200 - 4 7 2 Alaska Goldpanners.. 000 033 01X - 7 9 1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Win-Gibson Loss-Wood

WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNSIf Rollie Gibson continues to pitch like he last night, the sideburn-sportin' southpaw could be the next Goldpanner to have his name engraved on an outfield plaque at Fresno City College that honors the best ballplayers in Fresno City history; listed right alongside another former Goldpanner and Fresno City standout- a guy by the name of Tom Seaver.
The Golpanners 2004 yearbook is a tribute to Seaver, so it's fitting that the Panners have another Fresno City product (Gibson went 10-1 this season as a Fresno City freshman) on the mound this season, and Gibson said that he came to Fairbanks this summer with a goal: to help the Panners win the Alaska Baseball League title and earn a berth at the National Baseball Congress Championships in August. The same things Seaver helped the Panners do in 1964.
Gibson went the distance on Friday at Growden Park, beating the the Anchorage Bucs 7-4; and in throwing his first complete game as a Goldpanner, Gibson upped his record as a starter this season to 3-1. The Panners took three out of four from the Bucs, and the two teams are now tied for third place in the current league standings, but the standings are still tight- the Panners are just a half-game back from the second-place Peninsula Oilers, and 2 1/2 games behind the league-leading Mat-Su Miners, who are in town for a three game set this weekend- and the league title and the two ABL berths to Wichita are still up for grabs.
"It's always a good feeling as a starting pitcher to finish what you've started," said Gibson after Friday's game. "And sometimes you just get in the groove and everything is just going right."
After a tough 1-5 road trip last week, the Panners are feeling groovy about being back at home-where they have been nearly unbeatable this year, with only two losses- and have gotten right back into the work of winning ball games.
"It's huge for us," said Gibson, of the importance of winning the series with the Bucs. "It's really tough to win on the road in this league and we were excited to come home and play in front of our fans."
Gibson shutout the Bucs through five innings, and gave up four runs (three of them earned) on seven hits in the game, while he struck out six and issued three walks, one of them in the ninth inning (with one out) that prompted a walk out to the mound by Panners head coach Ed Cheff.
"That was the third time he came out and visited in that game," said Gibson. "And I was kind of mad because I thought he was going to give me the hook. But he asked me how I felt and I said I felt good. My arms felt good and my legs felt good. He said he was going to give me the next guy."
The next Buc batter, DH Jerin Harper did reach base, on a fielder's choice, but the Panners got the second out of the inning on a force at second of Travis Bechtel, the man Gibson had walked. Cheff kept Gibson in the game and his faith in his pitcher was confirmed, as Gibson finished off the Bucs just one batter later, when third baseman Jim Geldhof flied out to his Goldpanner counterpart, Jose Castanon.
"Working out of the jams really helps your confidence and your composure when you get into a tough situation in another game," said Gibson. "If you show (coach Cheff) you can do it, he's not going to give you the hook real fast."
The Panners provided their pitcher with strong run support, led by catcher Paul Keck (3-4 on the night, with a run scored) and leftfielder Mike Lissman (2-4, with four RBI and two runs scored), and capitalized on some big Buc mistakes, including a brain cramp by Bucs second baseman Isaac Omura in the sixth inning.
Omura forced out Keck at second on ball hit into a fielder's choice by Lissman, but then Omura dropped the ball and headed toward the dugout- even though there were still only two outs in the inning, and DH Brian Jeroloman ( who'd doubled and driven in second baseman Cameron Blair, after Blair walked and stole second) scored, as did Lissman, who reached second on Omura's mistake, stole third and came home on a wild pitch by Bucs starter Blake Wood with Castanon at the plate.
The Panners three-run sixth followed a crazy Bucs-half of the inning, in which they scored two runs but threatened for more, while the Panners were aided with the first out of the inning- with the bases loaded- on a baserunning interference call against Bucs centerfielder Truan Mehl, who had singled to reach base and stole second, and was heading to third on a ball hit to the shortstop hole by Bucs leftfielder. The third out of the half-inning was even more controversial- and confrontational- as Blair threw out Bucs shortstop Joey Wilson at the plate, after an attempt by Omura to steal second after he reached base on a close call at first (ruled an error) on a throw from Panners shortstop Arman Sidhu to first baseman Allen Balmer.
Keck blocked the plate and held onto the ball as Wilson crashed into him, and that caused some tension as both benches cleared temporarily; but Wilson's actions are legal under the American League rules that the ABL follows (although the collision would not have been allowed under collegiate rules and that's probably why the incident was potentially so incendiary), and the situation was resolved quickly by the home plate umpire, who tossed Roberts for an aggressive reaction during the brief standoff.
"That's how baseball goes, that's how the ball rolls," said Lissman, when asked about the Bucs misfortunes. "It's just like being a hitter. You take advantage of their mistakes."
And after a brief dry spell at the plate, Lissman said he's glad to be contributing significantly once again to the Panners offense, and to have helped Gibson get the complete-game win.
"I was just trying to hit the ball square," said Lissman. "I haven't been hitting the ball well, but I'm just trying to help out the team, and when you see the guy out there on the bump and he's just dealing and working hard for us, it makes everyone else say, 'We gotta get runs and get hits.' He sets the tempo." | | | | |
