WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS Forget about the Grand Slam Breakfast. Denny's may be a post-Midnight Sun Game favorite among players and fans, but food from a restaurant chain can't compare to a homemade meal cooked by a Goldpanner host family; just as hitting a grand slam is a mere snack when compared to having a feast of four home runs in a day.
That's right: Four home runs.
Before Saturday's Alaska Baseball League double header against the league-leading Mat-Su Miners, Goldpanners Cameron Blair and Brian Jeroloman were invited over for breakfast at the Ginley household, where their teammates Brad Davis and Mike Lissman are spending the summer.
Afterwards all four went out and made important contributions to the Goldpanners' sweep of the twin bill and an impressive leap in the league standings- the Panners won the first game 6-5, the second 5-4, and moved into a second-place tie with the Miners in the league standing, ½ game back of the Peninsula Oilers.
But even though Davis pitched an impressive winner in the second game, and Jeroloman picked up the game-winning RBI in the first, the most dramatic and high-impact performance of the day was Blair's own personal home run derby. He hit four home runs Saturday afternoon- including three in the first game- and drove in eight of the 11 runs total that the team scored in the two games.
"It was that French toast and bacon breakfast that did it," said Blair, the second baseman with a team-high eight home runs- including one grand slam- on the season, as he sat next to Lissman outside the Goldpanners dugout, as the two refueled with sandwiches and sodas between the two games.
In the noontime opener, Blair hit his three home runs off of two different Miner pitchers; and the first, B.J. Church obviously didn't learn how not to pitch to Blair after their matchup in the first inning- when Blair took one of his fastballs over the left field fence for a three run shot- because Church showed Blair the same pitch, on the same count, with the bases empty in the third; and again Blair drove the ball over the wall in left field.
"The first guy came inside to me with a fastball on a 3-1 count," said Blair of the first pitch that he hit out of the park. "Then he came inside to me with a fastball again (in the third inning) on a 3-1 count."
Jeff Gilmore, the next Mat-Su pitcher to surrender a home run to Blair- a solo shot in the seventh-hung a pitch that Blair could handle, and he hit that out of the ballpark too.
"The second guy was throwing a split finger and a curveball," said Blair. "On 3-1 he threw a split finger and I got good wood on it."
Gilmore made certain though that he wouldn't allow himself a second opportunity to make a mistake pitching to Blair, because he intentionally walked him- to load the bases with the score tied- in the bottom of the ninth inning, and that brought Jeroloman, the catcher, to the plate.
"The intentional walk is just there to protect the pitcher," said Blair. "And when they walked me, it gave Brian a good chance to get a hit and he had a great at-bat."
Jeroloman's patience against the obviously rattled Gilmore proved to be the game winner, as Gilmore couldn't hit his spots, and gave Jeroloman a free pass to walk in the Goldpanners winning run.
With his three home run game, Blair joins a select group of Goldpanner alums who accomplished the same feat- Rod Boone in 1970 and Dave Kingman in '69 were the last to do it before Blair- when they played for the Panners.
"Absolutely," is how Blair responded when asked if he was proud to be the newest member of that exclusive club. "The Boone boys are obviously some of the best hitters in the game. I was lucky enough to get the pitches to hit, and it helps that I've got good guys hitting in front of me and behind me."
