WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS

The Miners kept on digging but they never hit paydirt. The club from the Mat-Su put their ace, Chris Mason, and his perfect (4-0) record and microscopic (0.96) ERA on the mound Sunday afternoon at Growden Park, to try and steal a win against the Goldpanners, to avoid being swept in their three-game weekend series.

The Panners countered with their ace for the ages, Sean Timmons, who entered the game 3-0 on the season, with a team record-tying 25 career wins.

Gold miners are known for being a stingy bunch; and for the first four innings on Sunday, both starters on these two Alaska Baseball League teams named for the state's rich mining legacy, kept their pokes 'o gold closed up pretty tightly; yielding only a few tiny nuggets to the opposition.

Panners rightfielder Johnny Coit singled in the bottom of the first, went to second on a walk issued to second baseman Cameron Blair, and scored on DH Paul Keck's RBI single. But the miners evened the score in the third, when Timmons gave up a leadoff double to catcher Eddy Rodriguez who scored on centerfielder Bret Bigler's RBI single.

A noontime start is an early one in the ABL, where long daylight hours make "early to bed" nearly impossible; and Saturday's double header and Sunday's single game started so early because of a scheduling conflict with the other tenant team at Growden Park the AIA Fire, after the Panners-Miners series had been postponed due to the July 4th wildfire smoke-out.

The Panners and Miners played 28 innings of baseball in little more than 26 hours over the weekend, and after Timmons and Mason both pitched a scoreless fourth inning Sunday, the two pitchers appeared to be the most alert-and effective- players in the game.

The anticipated pitchers duel erupted into a shootout in the fifth though; as the Miners batted around the order, and dug into Timmons for six runs on five hits- a seemingly solid lead with Mason on the mound-only to see the Panners climb right back out of their deep, dark, six-run mine shaft of a deficit in the home-half of the fifth, countering with four runs of their own, on five hits.

Trevor Mortensen, Coit, Cameron Blair and Brian Jeroloman scored the Golpanner runs, on RBIs by Jeroloman, Paul Keck (with two) and Allen Balmer.

Brett Andrade, the Panners big righthanded reliever from Long Beach State, took over for Timmons to start the sixth, and said he was inspired by his teammates' fifth inning production at the plate, that put Andrade and the Panners right back into a tight ballgame.

"You just feel that on the bench," said Andrade. "They're not giving up. I just want to go out there and keep putting zeros on the board and give my team a chance."

Goose eggs was all that Andrade gave the Miners in their next six at-bats, as the contest extended into extra innings after the Panners scored two more runs (David Moore and Arman Sidhu) in the sixth, off of Mason on two hits, singles by Mortensen and Moore, and a walk to Sidhu, driven in by Mortensen and Coit.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, and two men on base, the Goldpanners couldn't have any better set up to walk off with another win; as their leadoff man, centerfielder Mortensen, the Santa Ana slugger- who already had five hits in nine at-bats against the Miner pitching staff- came to the plate to face reliever John Cahill.

Cahill came on in the ninth to replace Mason, and Mortensen's 10th inning at-bat was the first time he faced him.

"The main thing is getting a good look at him in the on-deck," said Mortensen, when asked about the challenge of trying to hit a pitcher he's never been up against before. "I ask for the other guys' input, seeing what (that pitcher) has. But usually I'm the leadoff guy, and I'm doing that for them. That's a big part of it."

And as a player who regularly hits in the leadoff spot, Mortensen said he can't afford to take pitches just to see what kind of stuff a pitcher has got.

"You don't want to go into it being timid," said Mortensen. "It might be the only time you see the guy. You might never see him again up here, so you might as well get your hacks in."

That's exactly what Mortensen did, swinging away on a 1-1 count, to drive a Cahill fastball to deep leftfield for a double and the game-winning RBI; scoring leftfielder Mike Lissman from second, after Lissman had reached base when Cahill nailed him in the back, and then advanced to second on a walk issued to shortstop Arman Sidhu.

"I had missed on an inside fastball," said Mortensen, of the first good pitch he saw from Cahill. "And I knew they were going to try to beat me with one again."

But with only one loss on their home field all season, the Goldpanners just continue to find ways not to get beat at Growden. And can they keep on doing it?

Mortensen's answer is, "Oh, Yeah."

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

6/21/06 @ Midnight

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
