Brian Jeroloman got mad, then he helped the Goldpanners get even.

The freshman catcher from Florida is a terror both at the plate- where he is riding an 11 game hitting streak- as well as behind it, where Jeroloman's strong throwing arm strikes fear into the hearts of would-be base stealers.

Batting cleanup, Jeroloman came up with the first and only Goldpanner hit in the first inning of Tuesday night's game against AIA, as the Panners found themselves in unfamiliar territory, down early, 3-0 to the Fire.

"I try to get mad at the pitcher," said Jeroloman, explaining the attitude he brings to the plate when he's hitting . The opposing pitcher may be determined to beat him but Jeroloman is more determined not to let it happen.

"When you're mad, you're more aggressive at the plate," said Jeroloman. "I'm constantly trying to take any advantage of the pitcher I can get. If I get ahead in the count I can be more aggressive, but if I'm behind in the count, I'm more patient."

Outside the lines of the diamond, Jeroloman is a pretty laid back and thoughtful guy, so it's hard to imagine the machinations of the Jekyll and Hyde-type transformation that occurs when he picks up a bat; but whatever he does, it's obviously effective.

Jeroloman balanced his aggression and patience at the plate perfectly on Tuesday, as he hit three base hits and an RBI double, finishing the night a game-high 4-5 at the plate, as the Panners rallied behind big at- bats from Jeroloman, Cameron Blair, Allen Balmer and Paul Keck to come back and beat the Fire 7-5.

The Panners starting pitcher, Scott Sarver, made his first appearance on the mound just a day after arriving in Fairbanks; and had a shaky first inning, as the Fire scored three runs on four hits.

But Sarver, the Cal State-Fullerton lefty fresh off an underdog College World Series championship, settled down in the second, retiring the side in order; and allowed just one more Fire run, in the fourth inning, as he pitched five complete, and picked up the win, after his new teammates piled on the hits in a two-out four-run rally in the fifth.

Keck's solo shot in the fourth put the Panners on the board, and Johnny Coit , Blair and Jeroloman all singled and scored in the fifth (as did Keck), courtesy of Keck's first two-run double of the game (he hit another in the sixth), followed by an Allen Balmer two-run base hit.

In the sixth inning, Keck scored Blair and Jeroloman who both singled again, and in the eighth, Jeroloman doubled to score Blair, who finished the night 3-4, with two stolen bases.

After recovering from a slow start, the Panners racked up an impressive 17 total hits, from Coit (2-5), Keck (3-5), Balmer (3-5), Joe Persichina (3-5), Jordan Struble (1-5), Blair and Jeroloman.

Kenny Maiques, whose four shut-out innings of long relief helped the Panners win the first game in last weekend's big three-game sweep of the Mat Su Miners, pitched another solid four innings Tuesday in relief of Sarver.

"Me and Gus (Knickrehm, the Panners pitching coach) have been working on a few things down in the pen," said Maiques, when asked about the recent big improvement in his performance following the Panners return from their first road trip a week ago. "I've been working on spotting my fastball early to get ahead in the count and using my slider to get the out in the end."

The hard-throwing righthander from Long Beach State struck out eight, and allowed one run on two hits; and while he got himself into trouble in the ninth by walking and hitting the first two Fire batters that he faced ("I've got to stop putting people on like that,"said Maiques); but worked himself out of the jam impressively, striking out the next three to seal the win; and with it the Panners sit atop the Alaska Baseball League standings, a half game up on the Peninsula Oilers and one game up on the Miners.

And as for Jeroloman's hitting streak, he didn't even know that he had one going; but when asked if he had any rituals or superstitions, like not changing his socks, that he followed when he was on a roll at the plate, Jeroloman did mention a certain work in progress.

"My teammates have been telling me to keep trying to growing this mustache," said Jeroloman rubbing his upper lip. Keep an eye on the emerging 'stache. It just might be Jeroloman's lucky charm.
