Win-Stimpson Save-Shaver Loss-Irwin

WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS

Jeff Stimpson was firing on all three cylinders.

The Stanford right hander from Redondo Beach had complete control over his three-pitch arsenal in his Wednesday night start, as he threw six complete shutout innings and picked up another home win, as the Panners held on to defeat the Fire, 6-4, and extended their unbeaten streak to eight.

"I'd say the biggest improvement in this game was that I was throwing all three of my pitches for strikes: fastball, curveball and changeup" said Stimpson, who recorded 10 strikeouts in the game, quintupling his strikeout total from his last start- a win one week ago against the
Anchorage Bucs.

"Most of my strikeouts were with the curveball," said Stimpson. "It had good movement and I could throw it in any count to keep the hitters off balance."

All four of the Fire runs were scored in the seventh, and charged to Panner reliever
Brett Andrade, who had a rough outing: he walked the first two batters he faced, the third reached on a fielder's choice and the next batter Scott Rooker hit a bases clearing triple.

Ryan Shaver took over for Andrade and the Fairbanksan earned his first save of the season in front of the hometown crowd, pitching the final three innings, allowing just one hit and two walks, while he struck out three.

The Panners scored five of their six runs in the first 2 1/3 innings of the game, off of Fire starter Caleb Irwin; Catcher
Brian Jeroloman got the Goldpanner's first hit of the game, a single to extend his mustachioed hitting streak to 12 games. DH Paul Keck then followed with another single, and leftfielder Mike Lissman put the Panners on the board with a sacrifice fly to center.

Shortstop
Ray Ravago had a big night at the plate, finishing 2-4, with an RBI and a run scored, and Ravago's singled in the second scored Keck. Third baseman Allen Balmer, who reached base on a walk, came home with the third run of the inning on a passed ball third strike to centerfielder Johnny Coit.

In the third inning,
Cameron Blair hit a leadoff solo home run, for his league-leading ninth homer of the season- hit in only 18 games, after he missed the first 10. Jeroloman singled again (he finished 2-4 with an RBI) and was again driven in by a Lissman (2-2 on the night with 2RBI) centerfield sacrifice fly.

But after Irwin was relieved by Matthew Scott, a deceptive, soft-tossing lefty, who pitched the final 5 2/3, it appeared that in Scott, the powerful Panner bats had finally met their match. The Goldpanners managed just one run on five hits of off Scott; and talk about keeping hitters off balance- the Goldpanners came up with nothing but trouble trying to time their swings to match the speed of Scott's pitches.

Asked what kind of adjustments he made to try to hit Scott, Keck replied, "None of the right ones."

Keck entered the game 7-15 against Fire pitching, but Scott held him hitless.

"That guy was throwing too slow," said Keck. "But effectively too slow. No one could get the timing down."

Scott hit Coit with a pitch the first time he faced him, but the next time up, Coit singled.

"It was a lot slower," said Coit, when asked how Scott's pitching compared to the other pitchers he's seen in the
Alaska Baseball League so far this season. "You have to sit back a lot longer and if you want it to come in faster, you have to scoot up in the box. It's hard to adjust to that type of speed."

Lissman, who had two hits (he singled and doubled) off of Scott, also made good adjustments at the plate to match Scott's style of pitching.

"It's kind of hard for everybody to stay back," said Lissman. "It's different. I tried to hit the ball the other way and really focused on staying inside the baseball."

And even though the Goldpanners won on Wednesday night-and still stand atop the ABL standings- Lissman said the team will have to play up to the potential they've shown in other games this season if they plan to stay out in front down the stretch- the upcoming final two weeks of league play.

"We didn't play very well today," said Lissman. "We expect more. If we want to beat the best we've got to play better."

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
