The Anchorage Glacier Pilots wouldn't want to face a better-pitching Carlos Fisher. The Goldpanners tall righthander beat the Pilots 3-1 Friday night, in his best of five starts for the Panners; but the Lewis-Clark State College Junior, who has continued to improve this summer every time he takes the mound, said he thinks the best is still yet to come.

"I'm still not where I was at in school this Spring," said Fisher, who posted an 8-1 record as the ace of Goldpanner and L-C coach Ed Cheff's Warrior staff.

Fisher upped his record as a Goldpanner to 2-1 Friday, and pitched his first complete game for the Panners in a contest that began in bright sunshine but ended in the downpour of a thunderstorm; when Fisher caught the Pilots catcher, Jason McGinnis, looking through the raindrops at a called third strike.

"I was just trying to get us out of there before it really started pouring," said Fisher. "I was just going to let them get themselves out. It just worked out that I got a strikeout."

Fisher recorded seven strikeouts on the night and gave up seven hits (two of them surrendered on the slick turf and gathering gloom of the ninth inning), and in the locker room after the game, happy to be out of the rain and pleased with his performance, Fisher explained some changes that he'd made in his pitching strategy.

"My focus today was to get that slider going early and I started throwing the curveball a bit," said Fisher. "But I was really tring to have 'em take that slider on the corner. I got that going pretty good, then came with the fastball or the breaking ball; but I got a lot of the strikeouts on the slider."

And those Pilots that did reach base were kept on a tight leash by Fisher and catcher, Brian Jeroloman.

"Brian had a great game tonight," said Fisher. "We've been focusing on base runners for a while and before the game we practiced that some more."

In the second inning, Pilot third baseman Derek Schermerhorn singled and stole second on a high throw from Jeroloman. But any confidence Schermerhorn might have gained that he could run on Jeroloman was short-lived, as Jeroloman caught him minutes later on a rifle shot of a throw, when Schermerhorhn boldly tried to take third.

Jeroloman threw out three baserunners on the night, including a strike 'em out, throw 'em out at second, to end the eighth inning, and a really crazy play that caught Pilot leftfielder Cyle Hankerd trying to steal second, with a throw from Jeroloman to shortstop Arman Sidhu, to first baseman Allen Balmer (who also played third base in the last three innings) and finally to second baseman, Cameron Blair, who made the tag.

Thursday night's loss to AIA was a game in which the breaks just never seemed to go the Panners way, but the Panners got a huge one back on Friday, when with one out and runners on first and second, Goldpanners left fielder Mike Lissman dropped a fly ball, but in a huge heads-up recovery, threw to Jose Castanon at third for a force-out, and Castenon fired over to Blair at second for the double play.

Blair continues to drive the Goldpanners offense this summer, and etch his name into the Goldpanner record books. Blair scored all three runs Friday, after he picked up his ninth and 10th walks of the season, and in the fifth inning Blair hit his 10th home run of the year- a feat last accomplished by current Houston Astro Jason Lane, when he played for the Goldpanners in 1997- and Blair has only played in 20 of the Goldpanners' games.

The two other Goldpanner RBI's on the night were picked up by Balmer, who went 1-2, with a single (and whose statement after Thursday's loss, about how the breaks of the game go from one day to the next, was "that's just baseball," proved to be prophetic on Friday), and by Sidhu, who was also 1-2 with a base hit; and for those keeping track at home, Sidhu wasn't just "nearly perfect" at the plate in Thursday's game- a late scoring correction put him at a positively perfect 4-4.

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
