WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS

You can safely bet the house, the farm and your firstborn child on this one:

The Goldpanners all-time career wins record, set Saturday night at Growden Park by the Panners ace for the ages, the 2003 Alaska Baseball League Player of the Year, Sean Timmons, WILL NOT be broken.

It's rare now for players to return for even a second season with the Panners, and this year, except for Timmons, the 26-year-old Fairbanks native now in his eighth year as a Goldpanner, and returning second-year pitchers Brad Davis and Brett Andrade, the rest of the Goldpanners are rookies.

Throughout his Goldpanner career, Timmons has maintained a mind-boggling standard of success and durability, while consistently facing the best up and coming bats in the country. Timmons has now pitched a never-to-be-matched 357 2/3 innings for the team, and posted a 26-9 career win-loss record (accomplished in only 43 starts). This season Timmons is 4-0 , in six starts, and scheduled for two more starts in the regular season.

In Saturday's 4-3 win over the Anchorage Glacier Pilots- played under hazy skies against the backdrop of an eerie reddish glow from two recently erupted wildfires just north of town- Timmons pitched 5 2/3 innings of seven-hit, three-run ball, and left the game with the Panners ahead by a run, turning a contest of history-making potential over to the Panners power-pitching reliever Kenny Maiques, who closed out the game- and shut down a Pilots comeback- without allowing a run, to earn his second save of the season and secure Timmons' 26th win as a Goldpanner.

"It wasn't a pretty thing," said Timmons of the outing in which he broke the record he'd shared since July 6- following a 12-3 win against the Anchorage Bucs -with George "Muggs" Mies the '60's-era Panners pitcher-first baseman, who played seven consecutive seasons for the club.

"But I got it done," Timmons added. "And It's a good feeling."

Timmons works quickly- the games he pitches are never the three hour-plus affairs that have been common this season at Growden- and he got off to a good start against the Pilots, allowing just three base runners, on a walk and two base hits, through five innings; and Timmons retired the side in order in both the second and fourth innings.

But the Pilots got to Timmons early in the sixth, leading off with consecutive base hits, and scored all three of their runs (on five hits) in the inning. When the call to the bullpen was made, Timmons turned the ball over to Maiques with two outs, and walked off the mound to a standing ovation from the large Kid's Night crowd..

"I made a couple of bad pitches," said Timmons. "I just left 'em up a bit, but you've got to give them credit for hitting them."

Maiques entered the game with one baserunner, the Pilots catcher Jason McGinnis, on second, and the first batter he faced, centerfielder Chad Lambeck, hit a daisy clipper down the third base line that got past Panners third baseman Allen Balmer.

But with McGinnis making the turn for home, Panners leftfielder Mike Lissman picked up the ball and fired in a perfect one-hop strike to catcher Brian Jeroloman, who put the tag on McGinnis to end the inning and preserve the Panners one-run lead.

"Coach Ed (Cheff) has really helped us working on balls coming off the turf, and at UF it's the same thing," said Jeroloman, the Florida freshman. "I've worked on that a lot and trying to block the plate."

Lissman said that when he made the play to the plate he didn't think much of it at the time, but in retrospect it was a game-saver.

"We've got a guy at second, and if it's (hit) at you you're just trying to throw the guy out at the dish," said Lissman. "It should be a routine play, but it came out to meaning much more. It saved a run and we won by one run."

Earlier in the sixth inning, Timmons eliminated what would have been another probable game-tying run, when he threw to shortstop Arman Sidhu, who covering second, and picked off the Pilots shortstop Ritchie Price for the first out of the inning. Price had singled, and took second on a double steal that scored his teammate Matt Baty, after Baty led off the inning with a single, took second on a throwing error, and reached third on Price's left field single.

"We came out on the short end of that," said Jeroloman, of the Pilots double steal, during which he threw quickly to second baseman Cameron Blair, who put the tag on Price at second and just missed nabbing him, before relaying the ball back to Jeroloman, who also just barely missed nailing Baty. "It has to be a perfect throw to second and a perfect throw back."

In 3 1/3 innings, Maiques recorded five strikeouts, and allowed only one baserunner, when he walked Price in the eighth.

"Coaches told me I was going to be pitching again if it was a close game," said Maiques, who in his last save appearance allowed two hits, a run and two walks, while striking out eight, over four innings, in a 7-5 Panners win July 13 against AIA. "Sean got into a little trouble and I came in and helped get the job done, and got it done for him."

With the win, the Panners climbed back atop the ABL standings, as the fight for the league title and the two ABL berths to the National Baseball Congress Championships in Wichita continues.

2006 MIDNIGHT SUN GAME
100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

6/21/06 @ Midnight

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
