WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNSA good pitcher is his own toughest critic.
"I was throwing all right," said Rollie Gibson after pitching seven innings in the Panners Tuesday night game against the Peninsula Oilers.
His teammate, third baseman Allen Balmer, disagreed though with Gibson's assessment of his own performance.
"No you didn't," said Balmer, running out of the dugout after the game. "You pitched great."
Simply put, Gibson, Balmer and the rest of the Goldpanners are playing great baseball, and they're doing it when it matters most- as the Alaska Baseball League title hunt comes to a head in this final week of league play- and with their 11-4 win last night over the Oilers (the Panners also beat the Oilers 8-7 on Monday), the two teams are now tied atop the league standings with two games remaining in their final series of the season.
The Oilers got off to a hot start against Gibson, when their leadoff man, Robert Perry, took the very first pitch he saw deep over the right field fence ("It happens," said Gibson. "I made a bad pitch and the guy jumped on it."); but the steely Fresno City southpaw isn't one to be flustered by a single pitch, and after a quick word with his catcher Brian Jeroloman and head coach Ed Cheff, Gibson got right back to work.
"I told Rollie it's better to give one up in the first than the ninth," said Cheff. "It's one run, and one run isn't going to have a bearing on the game. He's such a competitor and such a winner that we know he can come back from that."
And from more.
Gibson clawed his way out of a third-inning, bases-loaded quagmire (he hit the leadoff man with a pitch and walked the next two batters to load 'em up) by getting the first out of the inning on a fly ball to leftfielder Mike Lissman, before he reached back for some heat to strike out the next two batters and quell the Oilers comeback threat.
"You just throw the pitches you're comfortable throwing," said Gibson. "The curveball wasn't working well early, so I was throwing mostly fastballs and some changeups the whole game."
Gibson gave up four runs on six hits, walked four and struck out seven in seven complete innings of work, before Derek Landavaso came in from the bullpen to pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth.
"It was a good outing," Gibson finally conceded. "But I'm really hard on myself. I got out of the jams with a lot of good pitches, but I got myself into the jams, and I got out of a lot of tough situations, two-out situations, by using my defense, my good defense, behind me."
The Panners speedy outfield trio of Lissman, centerfielder Johnny Coit and rightfielder Trevor Mortensen cover a lot of ground in the Growden Park outfield, and Mortensen saved Landavaso an eighth inning baserunner when he ran down a fly ball deep in the power alley.
"The sun wasn't a problem," said Mortensen, responding to a question about the often notorious Growden rightfield glare. "It was more the shade coming off the grandstand. But I got a good jump on it right when he hit it. I read it from the catcher. I saw Brian (Jeroloman) set up outside."
The Oilers appear to have a good read on Jeroloman now too, because with the rocket-armed Florida freshman behind the plate last night, they didn't attempt to steal a single base.
In the most important series of the season, The Goldpanners are getting big offensive production throughout the entire lineup, and last night the seven-, eight- and nine-hole hitters, David Moore, Joe Persichina and Arman Sidhu combined to score eight runs and drive in six. The big dings were shortstop Sidhu's second inning two RBI double, DH Moore's fifth inning two-run home run, and first baseman Persichina's consecutive RBI triples in the seventh and eighth innings.
And Persichina had the pleasure of hitting one of his triples off of his Arizona State teammate Pat Cassa.
"That's a little rivalry in itself," said Persichina of the match-up. "It's a step above, it's at another level, and I kind of like that, because you know more about each other; he knows how you hit and you know the way he pitches, so you can make yourself more prepared and can be more focused. It's a little rivalry in itself, teammate against teammate, and you want to win that battle."
