With ice water flowing through his veins and pouring fire from his fastball, Goldpanners closer Derek Landavazo shut out the pressure of a two-on, no-out, ninth-inning save situation- and slammed the door on the Oilers late-game threat to eliminate the Panners from both the Alaska Baseball League title hunt and one of the two league berths for post-season play.

"Every day it's win or go home, we know that" said leftfielder Mike Lissman, after the Panners pulled off their third straight home win against the Oilers in heart-pumping fashion (once again) on Wednesday, as Landavazo deftly defended their slim 7-6 lead.

"It just seems like a different mentality," said Lissman, who tripled (and later scored) to leadoff a big four-run, sixth-inning rally, when the Panners were down 6-3. "Everyone just steps it up. Lando closed out the game, it's a big win for us. Now we've got two more."

The first-place Panners will play the Oilers once again at Growden Park tonight, and will then travel to Palmer to play the Mat-Su Miners on Saturday in their final league game of the season. The top four teams in the league- the Panners, the Anchorage Bucs, the Miners and the Oilers- are now all within a game of one another in the league standings.

But the tie-breaking scenarios that could determine the ABL's National Baseball Congress Championship berths do not favor the Panners. So if they want to play in Wichita, the Panners need to win now. They know it, and that's the way they're playing.

When Landavazo, the Lewis-Clark State junior from Union City, CA took the hill last night, he was staring at baserunners on first and second, both of whom had been hit by pitches from Kenny Maiques. Maiques came on in relief of Ryan Shaver ( who gave up one unearned run and two hits in 2 and 2/3 innings after he took over from starter Reid Hamblet) in seventh inning, who had threw a scoreless seventh and eighth, before he lost control- but not the wicked speed- of his fastball.

The Oilers Felipe Garcia took exception to getting plunked by a pitch, and fired off a few choice words in Maiques' direction, then made a half-hearted attempt to charge the mound before he was restrained by his coaches and sent to the dugout for a pinch runner. It was obvious- even to Garcia's teammates- that Maiques wouldn't purposely put the tying run on base, but the intensity of this high-stakes, four-game series has ratcheted up to a level at which it's more difficult to just keep on the game face and just play baseball- especially for the Oilers, who have seen the Panners steal their league lead, and whose post-season plans (the Oiler are rumored to have already purchased their tickets to Wichita) may be suddenly shelved.

From the very first batter he faced, it was obvious that Landavazo was not just comfortable, but relishing his place in the pressure cooker. He fielded a hard hit ground ball from shortstop Chris Minaker and took a quick glance toward first and second to assess a double play possibility, before turning and firing to Allen Balmer for the force out at third.

The baserunners, Minaker on first, and Nathan Faulkner, the second batter hit by Maiques, on second were obviously trying to rattle Landavazo by taking sizeable leads and moving back and forth to the bag whenever Landavazo started his motion, and he kept Faulkner in check with a few tosses back to Cameron Blair at second.

The next Oiler at-bat, by Andy Dahl, was a long one filled with pickoff attempts, 10 pitches before the count came full and a visit to the mound by the Panners catcher Jordan Struble.

"I just basically told him to keep the ball down and we figure out what we want to with that particular batter," said Struble. "I make sure he understands the situation out there- to keep track of the guys on base and keep 'em honest out there."

Lndavaso walked Dahl, to load the bases, but then he no longer had the distraction of worrying about potential base stealers and could focus completely on his pitching with only one remaining distraction, but it was a welcomed one.

"You could really hear the crowd," said Landavazo after the game "You can hear the feet stomping and they were making a lot of noise. There was good intensity out there."

Landavazo responded to the roar of the crowd with consecutive strikeouts, of DH Rocky Laguna and third baseman Pat Rooney, and then the Growden Park faithful went wild as the Panners poured out of the dugout to congratulate their closer- cool beyond comparison.

"I was just trying to get after it and throw strikes," said Landavazo. "Appreciate the game and do my thing and take it one pitch at a time. I just have to keep it down and my stuff can beat about anyone That was a big win but we've got one more to go. We've got to get it."

100th Anniversary (1906-2006)

Baseball at midnight? Only in Alaska (Miami Herald) - ‘’It was weird,'’ said Brad Arnsberg, a former Marlins pitching coach, of the Midnight Sun experience. “You had to have foil on your bedroom windows just to keep the light from jumping in when you were trying to sleep. I remember, unfortunately, walking out of a couple of bars at three or four in the morning and it was broad daylight. It was kind of an odd feeling.'’
