WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS It couldn't be over, could it?
The Goldpanners played their final home game of the season Thursday evening; but unlike most nights, when the ballpark clears out fairly quickly after the last out is recorded, and the ballplayers have finished packing their gear in the dugout and signing baseballs for young fans, last night many of the players lingered at the park, not quite ready to let go of the game and the magic of the home season.
The Panners had just played what was essentially a win-(and go to Wichita)-or-go-home game against the Peninsula Oilers, and the home team had come up on the short end, losing 8-3. The Alaska Baseball League title race has been so tight this season, that the Panners have anticipated for weeks that both their league title hopes and their chance to lock up one of the ABL's two berths for post-season play at the National Baseball Congress championships in Wichita, would hinge on this week's four-game series with the Oilers
The Panners went into last night's game in sole possession of the league lead- after winning the first three games of this series- and with only two games left in their regular season; but after losing last night they might not even finish second in the ABL race, and could fall as far as third or fourth -that's how tight things are at the top. The Panners and Oilers are now tied for second in the league standings, ½ game behind the Mat-Su Miners and the Anchorage Bucs, who are tied for the lead..
The Panners must win their final league game of the season against the Miners in Palmer on Saturday to keep their Wichita hopes alive; and the Panners post-season plans could also use some help from the other Growden Park home team, the last-pace AIA Fire, who the Goldpanners hope will play the spoiler by winning at least one of their last two league games, against the Miners in Palmer on Friday and the Oilers in Kenai on Saturday, and help the Panners in the hunt for the post-season. The Bucs record stand pat, their regular season is done. So after the results of the remaining league games shake out, it's possible that a one-day playoff tournament (probably played in Anchorage on Sunday) would still be needed to break a three- or four-team tie.
"It's just a rat race right down to the finish," said the Panners first baseman, Joe Persichina, after last night's game. "We were in first place before this game and we lost, and now we might not even be in the top three."
Persichina has been an unstoppable force at the plate throughout this series- finishing 12-15 over the four games-and last night he doubled and singled, but did not score- and that was the story of the night. The Panners left the bases loaded in the second, fifth, sixth and ninth innings, with only one run to show for their efforts.
"It's a back-breaker, it's disappointing," said Persichina, discussing the loss and its implications, as he sat in the dugout after the game. "But it doesn't always come down to the last game of the season. If we won a few more games on the road...."
The Goldpanners home record this season is an astounding 26-5, but on the road the Panners are just 4-10.
But more prevalent than disappointment among the Goldpanners, was this; a feeling that "we played with our all," said Persichina, right before he headed back onto the field to play catch with a young Goldpanner fan. "And that's all you can ask for."
The Panners can be proud of taking three of four from a tough Oilers team, that came into Fairbanks in first place and full of confidence; and the Panners played cooly in winning the two one-run, nail-biting contests of the series. And win or lose, it's easy to appreciate how much the Panners respect the efforts of their teammates and enjoy playing together.
"We've got a great team up here," said second baseman Cameron Blair, who was just named the 2004 ABL player of the year. "You play with a great bunch of guys and with great coaches I can't say enough about these guys. We're good together and we've been clicking and it's been a heck of a summer."
And despite missing the first ten games of the season, Blair still smacked an eye-popping eleven home runs- and he hit four in one day (three in the first game and one in the second game) in a July 10 double dip at Growden against the Miners. Impressively, even without his four-home-run- day, Blair would still lead the league in round-trippers.
"I'd go with these guys any day of the week," said DH David Moore, echoing Blair's sentiments about their fellow Goldpanners, as Moore shared a seat with some of his teammates on the picnic table outside GM Don Dennis' office after Thursday's game.. "I've had a blast being with these guys."
Moore has gotten more playing time in the last two weeks of the season, after another 2004 ABL all-league choice, DH Paul Keck (who also catches), was forced to leave the team for a family emergency. Moore came up with a big two-run homer in the second game of this series with the Oilers; in 10 at-bats over two games in the series he drew six walks, including an incredible four walks last night in five at-bats, and Moore brought in a run when he walked with a bases loaded in the fifth inning.
It's just patience," said Moore, of his recent penchant for the free pass. "A couple of times during the season I wanted to get hits so bad, but now that I've got my shot I've got nothing to lose, and I got some hits the other night (including a two-run home run). At the start of the season I was a little nervous, but I've started to settled down a bit. When you're hitting good you're seeing the ball well and you get a lot of walks."
There was no doubt about the name that Goldpanners head coach Ed Cheff would be penciling into the lineup card as the starting pitcher for Thursday night's game- a contest that would close out not just the home season, but a record-setting career as well- it was that of Sean Timmons, the club's all-time career leader in wins, starts, innings pitched and seasons played.
Timmons, the 2003 ABL Player of the Year, and a 2004 all-ABL team pitcher, brought his unblemished 5-0 record and 2.98 ERA to the mound Thursday, in what was most probably (but never say never) his last start at Growden Park- after eight seasons and 27 wins the hometown pitcher will be heading off to become a physician's assistant this fall.
Throwing to his all-league battery mate Brian Jerolomam, 2004's all-ABL team catcher, Timmons kept the Oiler in check through the first three innings, allowing just a base hit and a walk; while the Panners put the first run of the game on the board in the bottom of the third. Centerfielder Johnny Coit doubled off of Oilers starter Michael Martin, and scored on a Blair sacrifice, and an error by Oilers shortstop Chris Minaker on a Jeroloman ground ball.
But the Oilers drilled out eight hits and drove six runs across in the fourth and fifth innings, before Timmons was relieved by Jeff Stimpson. Stimpson gave up two quick hits and a run, but then he settled down to get the final two outs of the inning. Stimpson pitched primarily out of the bullpen in his freshman season of college ball this year at Stanford, but has worked his way into the Panners starting rotation; and Stimpson had plenty of gas to finish off Thursday's game for the Goldpanners; but when it was done, he was too- the last man left in dugout, alone with his thoughts, and visibly exhausted both physically and emotionally from his effort to keep the Oilers in check.
"I just felt like I was throwing under a lot of pressure," said Stimpson. "It was a do or die situation if we were to go to Wichita. We were down a lot of runs when I came in and I knew I couldn't afford to give up any more."
Stimpson effectively stemmed the Oilers momentum, allowing a total of two runs on five hits in 4 and 2/3, but while the Panners came tantalizingly close to mounting a comeback with bases- loaded-fifth, -sixth and -ninth innings, they couldn't come up with the hits in the clutch.
The Panners still have at least one more game to play though; and they haven't given up trying to get to Wichita.
"We've got to stay focused ," said Persichina. "And play that game like it means something. Because it does."
