12/7/4: National Tourney Strikes Out With ABL ADN "The ABL has sent teams to the NBC tournament since 1962. In the 42 years since, ABL teams have collected 16 championships -- including an NBC-best six by the Fairbanks Goldpanners and five by the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. A 10-team, round-robin tournament with the six ABL teams and four Outside teams is proposed for Aug. 2-8, Mattingly said. Every team would be guaranteed six games as opposed to the two-game guarantee in Wichita." (Actually, League champ is going to NBC)

For Mr. Stroecker, there is an added amenity. He gets to blow his trumpet with a trio of old friends — the Frigid Aires, they call themselves — playing swing music in the embrace of summer light on the infield before the game starts. They profess to love winter here, but in truth, they crave the daylight, never more so than in June, when all of Alaska seems to be solar charged, hopped up on ultraviolet energy. "You enjoy every minute of this," said Mr. Stroecker, who has lived his entire life in Fairbanks, "because from here on out, it goes downhill a little bit every day."

Mixing two pitches that were well-spotted, Hester scattered four hits through seven innings of work, and he allowed no runs and struck out 12 All-Stars.  "I like it here," he said. "With 22 hours of daylight, you go to sleep when you're tired and wake up ready to play. This is a great atmosphere for baseball."

Pete Christopher, general manager of the Mat-Su Miners, attributes the professional-like atmosphere. The schedules are tough with teams playing for days without a break. Long bus trips are constant as players learn to live out of their suitcase. It’s different than other leagues because all their away games are day trips, he said.     After all, the purpose of this league is to train young players for professional ball, said Terry “Yogi” Cox, interim general manager and assistant coach of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots."
