For Mr. Stroecker, there is an added amenity. He gets to blow his trumpet with a trio of old friends the Frigid Aires, they call themselves playing swing music in the embrace of summer light on the infield before the game starts. They profess to love winter here, but in truth, they crave the daylight, never more so than in June, when all of Alaska seems to be solar charged, hopped up on ultraviolet energy. "You enjoy every minute of this," said Mr. Stroecker, who has lived his entire life in Fairbanks, "because from here on out, it goes downhill a little bit every day." 6/24/4: June 24, 2004 vs. AIA - Game Story by Andy Sterns "I was just staying warm and taking a couple of practice swings," said Persichina, on how he passed the timeout. "The crowd was going crazy, but I just try to stay calm and keep my composure when I get in the box, no matter what the situation is." 6/23/4: Solstice of Swing Shines on Alaska - Denver Post "Scanning the stands, I notice a young woman selling beer. She has eyes like a husky and is wearing sandals. The temperature has dropped to the high 30s. I wonder how long I can hold out before sporting my embarrassing hat with the cozy earflaps. It's better than I could have wished for." 6/21/4: A Fairbanks Classic 6/21/4: Midnight Sun Game tonight "It was kind of chilly, but the clouds cleared off and the sun came out right when the game started," Timmons recalled. "I had to stop a couple of times and just take it all in because it was that great." 6/21/4: Panners win in walkover 6/21/4: Blake Gill (02 MVP) LSU takes injuries in stride - "It's been a long season. The season has kind of taken a toll on me," LSU shortstop Blake Gill said. "That's the thing about baseball: There are four or five games a week, and eventually the nicks here and there are going to take a toll on you." 6/20/4: On the Ball: Goldpanners Announcer Does More Than Talk 6/20/4: Panners rally again to win "As happy as Alaska was to rise to the occasion amid high 80-degree weather, San Diego was frustrated about taking a lead early but losing control, and the game, on consecutive nights. One stinging aspect of the defeat for the Waves was they had nearly twice as many hits as the Goldpanners--12-7." 6/20/4: Touches of Alaska at Safeco Ballgames "A lot of guys played baseball in Alaska," Guardado said as the Mariner relief pitchers beat the starting pitchers in a home run derby before Saturday's game. "Alaska was one of my best baseball experiences. Sharon Woods was my host parent and I still keep in touch with her. I had a great time, a great experience." "It was great, the people and the lifestyle," Bob Boone said of his Alaska experience. "We worked all day, played baseball at night, then we'd go fishing." 6/20/4: ABL:PILOTS: Another left-hander gets best of Pilots 6/20/4: ABL: Oilers - Oilers offense sputters in defeat | Host family meeting players' needs for 25 years "They do eat a lot," she said Friday, after watching a tough 1-0 Oilers loss at Kenai's Coral Seymour Memorial Park." 6/20/4: Positively smashing for Miners 6/18/4: Cameron Blair - Texas Tech, Added to 2004 Roster - Played his freshman season at the University of Houston under head coach Rayner Noble (81) 6/18/4: Caps off to fans who aren't pushy - "A man caught a foul ball in his cap during Wednesday night's California Victory Dons-Alaska Goldpanners baseball game at Growden Memorial Park. The slender, seemingly middle-aged spectator stuck out his cap and positioned it to have the ball land snugly in his headgear. The crowd applauded and the public address announcer exclaimed, "Sign him up!" And unlike Sunday's Major League Baseball game in Arlington, Texas, no 4-year-olds were harmed in the snagging of the ball." 6/18/4: Bucs defeat Fire - DN-M 6/17/4: Elliott Strankman (03-04) | Mike Lissman | Brandon Morris | Kinzey Reeves - New Panner Pages! 6/17/4: Paul Keck - New Panner Page! 6/17/4: June 16 vs. Dons - ScoreCast, Pics & Game Story 6/16/4: Jordan Struble - New Panner Page! 6/16/4: June 15 vs. Dons - ScoreCast, Game Story & Pics 6/16/4: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - Updated 6/15/4: June 14 vs Dons - Pictures and Game Stories Added 6/15/4: Panners Suffer First Defeat "This is my first time up to Alaska; I was just taking it all in," said Lewis, who, like many of the Dons, plays for Santa Ana Community College in California. A fielder's first step is often the difference maker between a spectacular stop and a ball that is too hot to handle. Arman Sidhu, the Panners rangy shortstop, gave the crowd at Growden Park a perfect example of why coach Ed Cheff brought him north to help anchor the Goldpanners' middle infield." 6/14/4: Added Bucs' News to Outside Links, Bucs 6/13/4: JUNE 12 vs Monarchs (1/2) - PannerVision, ScoreCast, Game Story & Pictures! "With a cool head and a hot hand, right-handed reliever Reid Hamblet pitched his way out of a ninth inning jam to preserve a one-run lead to pick up a win in his first appearance as a Goldpanner, and secured the Panners 3-2 victory Saturday night over the visiting Michigan Monarchs." 6/13/4: Panners top Michigan Monarchs - "Joe Persichina wasn't nervous in his first game with the Alaska Goldpanners, the two-time defending champions of the Alaska Baseball League. "It was more like energy. Everybody was positive in the dugout,'' said the second baseman from Arizona State University. "I'm trying to have fun and soak up the atmosphere. It's a program with a great tradition and I'm happy to be here, its a privilege to play in Fairbanks." 6/12/4: Goldpanners open season with a win "Left-hander Jameson Hester, a freshman at Grossmont College in San Diego, put together a stellar tryout for the Panners. Mixing two pitches that were well-spotted, Hester scattered four hits through seven innings of work, and he allowed no runs and struck out 12 All-Stars. "I like it here," he said. "With 22 hours of daylight, you go to sleep when you're tired and wake up ready to play. This is a great atmosphere for baseball." 6/12/4: ABL:PILOTS: Glacier Pilots storm back after trailing by five 6/12/4: New Oilers manager was a member of national championship club 6/11/4: 2004 PRESEASON - New Scrapbook Page! 6/11/4: Panners to begin season "It means a lot to be trying out for this team," said Lathrop graduate Kinzey Reeves, who hopes to make the club as a right-handed pitcher. The 6-foot-10, 210-pound Reeves attends St. Peter's College in New Jersey, where he plays both basketball and baseball for the Peacocks. "The Panners are such a big deal in Fairbanks during the summertime," Reeves added. "It's exciting to be out here." 6/11/4: ABL:BUCS - Oddities abound in Bucs' 12-inning win 6/11/4: ABL:MINERS - Carson desire apparent in Miners' triumph 6/10/4: ABL:PILOTS: Video 'strictly for the fans' "The limited-edition film -- only 150 copies are available -- is subtitled, "Alaskan Baseball Stories -- Tales, Legends and Heroes of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots.'' It is the first of Barr's planned three volumes about the Alaska Baseball League team that has played here since 1969, and for anyone who has followed the team or the ABL for very long, it is a gem." 6/9/4: 'LEFTY' named boss of Pilots (subscription) 6/8/4: ABL:BUCS - Weaver thrilled to be taken in first round by Halos 6/8/4: ABL:PILOTS - Baseball lures Californian North 6/7/4: Alaska should be wary of lower 48 leagues "I think it's lost some of its luster," Radatz said of Alaska summer league ball. 6/6/4: ABL: Oilers baseball gets down to business - Since the club started in 1974, the Oilers have been one of the top summer collegiate baseball programs in the country. The Oilers won National Baseball Congress World Series titles in 1977, 1993 and 1994. 6/3/4: ABL: 21 'Bows will play summer baseball - "Outfielder Greg Kish and second baseman Isaac Omura will go north to Alaska and play for the Anchorage Bucs. Right-hander Steven Wright will pitch for the Peninsula Oilers, who are located in Kenai. The Alaska Baseball League began play Tuesday and finishes Aug. 1." 6/3/4: Six-team roster runs up the score with top-notch players - Rachel Kvapil, AK This Month "How Alaska became a premier non-professional training ground is no mystery. Pete Christopher, general manager of the Mat-Su Miners, attributes the professional-like atmosphere. The schedules are tough with teams playing for days without a break. Long bus trips are constant as players learn to live out of their suitcase. Its different than other leagues because all their away games are day trips, he said. After all, the purpose of this league is to train young players for professional ball, said Terry Yogi Cox, interim general manager and assistant coach of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots." 6/2/4: Oilers ready to take the field - PEN "The brightly colored red and white creature with a yellow snout, at once a large rooster and some sort of dog-faced prehistoric mammal, bounded into the dining room of the Riverside House as Oilers corporate board President Dennis Smith was finishing up his formal presentation about the collegiate summer baseball program and giving the audience a bit of the team's history and a look at the program's impact on the community. "Generally speaking, the players compare to AA baseball," Smith said, referring to a level of minor-league baseball that hopefully leads players to the majors." 5/13/4: MSM: Inoyue, Rainbows safe at home 5/11/4: KPO: Wizards' outfielder Wahlbrink sets pace "Wahlbrink also enjoyed the 60-degree weather, learning how to fish for king salmon. "I caught a couple 30-pound king salmon. I'm not a fisherman, so that was an absolutely wonderful experience for me," Wahlbrink said. "Just the terrain, it's just amazing terrain. There's snow on top of every mountain. There's moose on the highway just walking around. "It's like a completely different lifestyle." 5/6/4: MSM: Former Flame Buchmiller lands a cool baseball gig "The job is highly regarded, so it feels really good," he added. "The league in Cape Cod is the only other league that rivals the talent of Alaska." 4/22/4: Welcome Back - DN-M "Sounds of amateur league baseball in the Fairbanks area still may be several weeks away, but fans have something to cheer about in the news: They again will have two local teams to watch. And that means more games, too." 4/19/4: Panners, AIA share Growden once again - Bob Ely, DN-M "The two local teams would like nothing better than to replicate their 1-2 finish in the ABL last season and return to Wichita this summer." 4/12/4: Chad Bentz (AGP-99) Cheer for an Expos' reliever? "Until now, the only guy truly raised in Alaska to make a big-league roster was Marshall Boze, a member of the Brewers in 1997 who lasted about as long as a winter streaker in downtown Fairbanks." 4/5/4: AGP: Chad Bentz Second High School/Am Legion Major League Alaskan 2/24/4: Mat-Su Miners: Matt Inouye named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week - He credits playing in the Alaska league over the summer for his success at the plate. ALASKAN BASEBALL HISTORY IN PICS DAILY-NEWS MINER ARTICLES Alaska This Month| Playoffs stars have roots in Alaska | Newspapers | MidSun Fun | Tugwell travels | 5/8/2 "Dave Winfield Recognition Day 6/2/4: Fairbanks is listed as Alaska's third largest city - "In 2000, the Census recorded Juneau's population as 30,711. The Golden Heart City's 2000 population: 30,224." 5/24/4: Newcomer adds name to political fray - DN-M "In the race for House Seat 7, local attorney Ward Merdes (81-82, BOD: 92-95) has filed, making for a primary race in the Republican party. This will be Merdes' first bid for elective office. He was born and raised in Fairbanks, returning here after school to practice law with his father, former state senator Ed Merdes (BOD: 67-91)." 5/15/4: Fairbanks: A Fairbanks woman with a heart of gold - Seattle Times "Come in, Dearie! Come in!" It was wartime in Alaska. Eva McGown was on duty. Often the visitors were military wives, newly arrived in Fairbanks, with babies in arms and other tykes tugging at their skirts. They were tired and discouraged. They had no place to stay. Somewhere along their disheartening searches for lodging, sympathetic Fairbanksans had suggested that the women "go see Eva McGown at the Nordale." 5/10/4: Alaska: Barrow begins 12 weeks of midnight sun - "Monday's sunrise was the last for Barrow residents for the next 84 days, as the summer of continuous daylight begins for the USA's northernmost point." 4/17/4: Gero von Dehn's "Fear Itself" has released 5 song demo CD, Co-Produced by G - NOW AVAILABLE through the G-Man himself (Kgero1@aol.com) 4/1/4: Greg Garrett (66) A Santa Clarita Folk Tale - "The Goldpanners had their finest season in 1966, going 50-13 and winning the league championship. But the players werent paid, so they had to find odd jobs, and Garrett found employment as a road worker. It was so cold and Greg hated the taste of coffee, so he would drink hot chocolate to keep warm out there, Garretts first wife Pam Koller recalls. He would tell me, I didnt care what those guys said, I cant drink coffee, and it was cold. 3/12/4: More 2001 Midnight Sun Game Pictures | Midnight Sun Festival Images 3/11/4: Land of the Radioactive Midnight Sun - Sean Michael Flynn "Growden Memorial is an old-fashioned ballpark with no bad seats and ticket takers and vendors that remember your name." 2/18/4: Fairbanks, Alaska Pictures - Stephen Cysewski 2/16/4: Yahoo Baseball Broadcast Page 2/15/4: Midnight Sun Game Pictures 2/14/3: Fairbanks in Winter: Added 2004 Yukon Quest 2/12/4: Chinese Taipei: Mutual distrust notwithstanding, China and Taiwan exchange baseball tips - "This hard-line attitude extends to sports. Since Beijing maintains that Taiwan isn't really a country, and many countries and international organizations concur, Taiwan can't participate in the Olympics under its own flag and must instead parade under a neutral Olympics flag and call itself "Chinese Taipei." 2/5/4: Photograph Midnight Sun at Eagle Summit | Fans at Midnight Ballgame | Zomerzonnewendebaseballwedstrijd (Updated) 1/26/4: 100 years of Baseball in Ketchikan | SiteNews Photos - Added to Alaska Baseball History 1/20/4: 2003 Midnight Sun Game - Special vacation picture page 1/18/4: Fairbanks Vacation Pictures (2003 MSG) - Now linked to larger pics 1/8/4: Alaska's Midnight Tee Party - "And by all means hit the Midnight Sun Baseball Game, a Fairbanks tradition that dates back at least to 1908, when the following hyperbolic account of the game appeared in a local newspaper: "The players had the blistering rays of the midnight sun beating down upon them, their every move followed intently by a crowd of wild fans whose enthusiasm held them in the oven-like bleachers." The idea behind the game, which begins at 10:30 p.m., is that the lights are never turned on. "There's a car in the parking lot with its lights on," intoned public address announcer Todd Dennis last year, "and lights are not allowed at the Midnight Sun Game." The crowd roared. 1/8/4: Welkom op ons Alaska-avontuur! | 2002 Midnight Sun Game - Best amateur pics yet! 1/8/4: Land of the Radioactive Midnight Sun - Ebook Sean Michael Flynn "Lt. Flynn requests a transfer to Eileson Air Force outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. He is a bit unnerved at how easy the transfer goes through. From a rugby game on a frozen river to living across from Santa's Village to a baseball game under the midnight sun to soaring over the Bush in an F-16, this is a hilarious trial-by-many-errors account of what it takes to become a true Alaskan." 1/2/4: Joe Connor at the MSG | Midnight Sun Game Album | 2002 MSG - Added to Midnight Sun Game in Pics 1/2/4: Sampling Tributaries of the Yukon River, May 2002 - Added to Chena River 1/2/4: Threads of Gold - History of Gold Rush | Alaskan Volcanoes - Alaska History in Pics | 2004 PRO NEWS | |
