The Alaska Goldpanners had beaten the Fairbanks Adult League All-Stars 16 straight times before losing to them by a run last season.
On Wednesday in their season opener, the Panners never gave the All-Stars a chance, scoring five times in the opening inning before rolling to a 14-0 win at sunny Growden Memorial Park.
Pitcher Kevin Hernandez, staying in a trailer on the ballfield grounds as he tries to earn a spot on the Panners roster, got the win with five innings of two-hit, six-strikeout pitching. Chu Yuan-Chin from Taiwan led the offense with four hits and three runs batted in as a small, but festive, Goldpanners crowd was introduced to the speedy centerfielder’s skills.
With barely half the team having arrived in Fairbanks, head coach Ed Cheff was hesitant to offer an assessment of this year’s team. The 2005 squad went 39-12 overall and dominated the Alaska Baseball League with a 28-6 record.
|
“It’s pretty hard to make an evaluation for about a week,” said Cheff, last year’s ABL Coach of the Year, who arrived in Fairbanks on Monday.
Cheff likes the team’s athleticism and said it should have more power hitting than in 2005, when the Panners relied on an overpowering pitching staff that allowed less than two earned runs per game.
He was also impressed by Hernandez, 20, who along with A.J. Davidson were invited to Fairbanks for a tryout.
“I think he’s got a good chance to make it,” said Cheff of Hernandez.
Hernandez, who came from junior college ball at Moorpark College in California and is heading to Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles in the fall, knows he must perform well if he wants to experience more of the “fun atmosphere” of the ABL.
“Basically if I don’t pitch good, then I go home,” he said.
That the opponent was a group of locals did not concern him.
“Just come out and throw strikes,” Hernandez said of his approach. “It didn’t matter who we were playing.”
The challenge for Cheff is quickly molding a team out of the talented college players that have come north from all around the country. For Hernandez, the bonding has already begun.
“I think today is the first signs of team chemistry,” said Hernandez. “I’ve already made friends since I’ve been up here.”
The Panners jumped on All-Stars starter Christian Rodriguez for five runs in the first inning on just one hit. Four walks by Rodriguez and a pair of errors cost the All-Stars as the Goldpanners batted around the order.
The Panners added a run in the second and four more in the third and sixth innings, rapping out nine hits total while committing no errors.
Chu, one of three Panners players recruited from the Taiwanese collegiate championship team, rapped a triple and three singles. With the bases loaded in the third, the left-handed hitter ripped a drive that had grand slam distance had he not pulled it foul. A few pitches later he settled for a two-run single.
Chu, playing very shallow in center, also doubled up an All-Stars runner who had strayed off first base on a fly ball in the second inning.
Kiel Bole of the All-Stars, playing his fourth game against the Panners but first as a pitcher, acquitted himself well with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
“I wish I could have got a couple more innings,” said Bole, a 2002 Lathrop High School graduate. “I knew I could do well if I just got the chance.”
For the All-Stars, Corey Pringle, Rob Marinace, Bill Scoun and Zach Wilson notched a hit apiece, each of them singles. Their best chance to score came in the sixth frame, when with runners on second and third and two outs, Goldpanner reliever Mai Chia-Yi struck out cleanup hitter Telly Robideau on a full-count high heater out of the strike zone.
The Goldpanners’ competition will ratchet up a notch tonight at 7 p.m. against the Stockton (Calif.) Senators.
