Panners suffer first loss of year

The Southern California Running Birds took advantage of three Alaska Goldpanner errors and rallied from a 4-1 deficit to claim a 5-4 nonleague summer baseball victory on Saturday night at Growden Memorial Park.

Brett Sigmund scored the only earned run of the game for the Running Birds when he homered in the top of the 13th inning to give the Southern California squad its only lead of the game.

It was the first loss of the summer for the Goldpanners, who will bring a 3-1 record into today's 2 p.m. rematch with the Running Birds at Growden.

The Panners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and had a 4-1 advantage through six, but Southern California scored off Panners reliever Dixon Allen in the seventh inning to tie the score.

The game remained 4-4 until Sigmund blasted his game-winning home run in the top of the 13th inning.

Sigmund finished the game going two for three with two runs scored. Running Birds right fielder Nick Mahin went 3 for 6 with 2 runs batted in, while Tim Deering and Chris Brehm added two hits apiece to the winning effort.

Matt Dufor, the fourth Southern California pitcher, got the win, working three innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit, while walking two and striking out three.

Chu Yuan-Chin went 3 for 4 with a run scored and one run batted in to lead the Goldpanners offense. Jordan Mayer and Brian Bird added two hits apiece for the Panners.

Mai Chia-Yi suffered the loss for the Panners, giving up just one run on four hits, while walking two and striking out 5 in 5 2/3 innings of relief.

After today's game, the Panners have Monday off and then host the Beatrice, Neb., Bruins in a three-game exhibition series. The annual Midnight Sun Baseball Game is slated for Wednesday at Growden. The game starts at 10:30 p.m. and is played in its entirety without the benefit of artificial lights.
