Panners give away final preseason game2006 "Midnight Sun Series"
Beatrice Bruins, Led By Bob Steinkamp
In their final tune-up before Alaska Baseball League play begins, the Alaska Goldpanners looked rusty, dropping a mistake-filled game 10-3 to the Beatrice Bruins.
The two squads combined to commit 12 errors, throw three wild pitches and make countless mental mistakes.
"The intensity level was zero," Goldpanners manager Ed Cheff said, "Trying new guys at different positions defensively didn't help us, but right now I'm not too concerned. We start league play tomorrow. If we play like this tomorrow I'll be concerned."
Despite their lackluster effort, Cheff still feels like the Panners are ready to contend as they start ABL play at 7 tonight against Athletes in Action Fire.
"I think it's going to be a pretty good ball club," Cheff said. "I think it's a lot better team than what we look like right now."
While Cheff called the Panners pitching performance "atrocious," he said he expects the pitchers to turn things around.
"I think we'll get our pitching a little better organized, and then I think we'll pitch a little bit," Cheff said.
Tyler Cheney went 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, on seven hits and two walks. Only two of the runs he allowed were earned.
The Goldpanners will host Athletes in Action (1-2 ABL, 3-4 overall) tonight at Growden. AIA is making its first appearance in Fairbanks this season, where they also play their home games.
The Fire opened the ABL season by losing two games to the Mat-Su Miners on Monday and Tuesday in Palmer, but came back to blank the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 3-0 on Wednesday night in Anchorage.
The miscues started early for the Panners (5-3). With two on and two out in the top of the first, Panners left fielder Chu Yuan-Chin overran Andrew Brown's single through the hole, allowing two runs to score and Brown to reach third on the error.
The Bruins (6-9) answered the Panners' errors with three of their own in the bottom half of the first, but pitcher Thad Weber was able to battle out of it.
After Chad Fox singled in his first at-bat as a Goldpanner, a throwing error by Bruin's first baseman Dion Parks allowed Fox to advance to third and Jovanny Bramasco to reach safety on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
After the next pitch, the Bruins tallied two more errors as catcher Kyle Lafrenz overthrew second on a stolen base by Bramasco. Fox scored on the overthrow and Bramusco advanced to third as the Bruin's center fielder over ran the ball while backing up the play.
Weber was able to get out of the jam, however, as the next three batters were unable to get the ball out of the infield.
"He threw strikes," Bruins head coach Bob Steinkamp said of his hard-throwing right-hander. "The main thing is he didn't give anything away."
The Goldpanners weren't as lucky. A Fox throwing error in the bottom of the second allowed the Bruins to take a two-run lead, and they would later add one to make it a 4-2 game.
One bright spot for the Panners came in the sixth when catcher Joey Dunn hit Alaska's first home run of the year, a two-run shot. Dunn hit Weber's 2-1 offering over the left field fence to bring the Panners within three runs.
"It was a fastball in the middle of the plate," Dunn said. "It's been something that I've worked on since I've been here, getting my hands on top of a pitch like that ... I got the pitch and I just reacted to it."
However, the Bruins added four more runs, on three Panner errors to seal the win.
The other bright spot was the play of Fox, who finished 3 for 5 in his first game as a Goldpanner.
