Staff Report
After scoring 26 runs in their first two Alaska Baseball League games, the Alaska Goldpanners struggled in their first game away from the friendly confines of Growden Memorial Park.
The Panners could only muster three hits and suffered their first league loss of the season, a 3-0 whitewashing at the hands of the Peninsula Oilers, on Tuesday night a Coral Seymour Stadium in Kenai.
Goldpanner starter Chris Kissock allowed just one earned run in seven-plus innings of work, but it wasn't enough as the Panners couldn't find a way to get their offense going against Peninsula hurler Jesse Jordan.
A 6-foot-5 left-hander, Jordan gave up all three hits to Goldpanner catcher Jessie Mier, while striking out five Panners and walking just one in the route-going performance.
The loss dropped the Panners to 2-1 in the ABL and 7-4 overall, while Peninsula snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 2-5 in the ABL and 10-8 overall.
The Anchorage Glacier Pilots lead the ABL with a 5-1 record, followed by the Panners at 2-1, Mat-Su at 4-3, Athletes in Action at 3-4, the Anchorage Bucs at 3-5 and the Oilers at 2-5.
The Panners and Oilers meet for the second game of their three-game series tonight in Kenai.
Alaska's game on Monday night against the Mat-Su Miners was rained out and has been rescheduled for July 29 at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
The Oilers scored the only run they needed in the third inning on Tuesday night when Kip Masuda reached first on an error, took second on a groundout, moved to third when Panner catcher Mier made a wild pickoff throw to second and scored on a base hit by Austin Yount, nephew of Hall of Famer Robin Yount.
The Oilers added another unearned run in the sixth inning and then chased Kissock in the top of the eighth when Jake Kahaulelio led off with a home run.
Following their games at Peninsula tonight and Thursday, the Panners play at the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Friday and at the Anchorage Bucs on Saturday before returning home on Sunday to host the Mat-Su Miners.
