Staff Report
The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks suffered their second straight Alaska Baseball League loss to the Peninsula Oilers on Wednesday night in Kenai.
The game was tied at 3-3 when the Oilers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and then held the Panners scoreless in the ninth to claim the win.
The loss dropped the Panners to 2-2 in league play and 7-5 on the season, while the Oilers improved to 3-5 in the ABL and 11-8 on the season.
The two teams meet again tonight in Kenai.
Trailing 3-1 after six innings, the Panners rallied for two runs in the seventh to tie the game, but then let the game slip away in the eighth.
Chris Schwinden went the first six innings for the Panners, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Brian Bird pitched the final two innings and took the loss.
The Panners managed just six hits in the game, but nobody had more than one and all six hits were singles.
After tonight's game, the Panners play at the Anchorage Bucs on Friday and at the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Saturday before returning home to host the Mat-Su Miners at 7 p.m. Sunday at Growden Memorial Park.
