A three-run rally in the top of the ninth inning wasn't enough as the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks suffered their third straight Alaska Baseball League loss at the hands of Peninsula Oilers of Kenai, 5-3 on Thursday night in Kenai.

Trailing 5-0 on just two hits after the first eight innings, the Panners pushed across three runs in the top of the ninth before the Oilers were able to get the final out.

Peninsula swept the three-game series and improved to 4-5 on the season, while Fairbanks dropped to 2-3 in the ABL.

After scoring 26 runs in their first two games of the ABL season, wins over Athletes in Action and the Anchorage Bucs last weekend at Growden Memorial Park, the Panners only managed to score four runs in the three games at Kenai.

The Panners now heads to Anchorage where they will play the Bucs on Friday night and the league-leading Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Saturday. The Panners will be back at Growden for a 7 p.m. game on Sunday evening at the Mat-Su Miners.

Tyler Cheney, a freshman from the University of Washington, suffered the loss for the Panners, giving up all five runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Reliever Jake Hower pitched 3 2/3 innings of one-hit scoreless relief.

Kenai reliever Matt Koons, who pitched six innings of two-hit relief, earned the win for the Oilers.
