Bucs rebound to upend Goldpanners

By ADAM RAEDER, Staff Writer

The Anchorage Bucs looked to improve their hitting, and with a little help from the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks, they did, beating the hosts 9-5 Friday at Growden Memorial Park.

The Bucs (9-7 in the Alaska Baseball League and 15-10 overall) strung together nine hits, and took advantage of five errors by Alaska (5-7, 10-10) to spoil Brian Bird's first start as a Goldpanner.

"We had about a half hour meeting on hitting," said Bucs head coach Mike Garcia. "We were not pleased with our results last night. We put in a lot of good batting practice with some adjustments and our hitters showed up tonight. I'm very pleased with it."

The nine runs was more then enough for Bucs starter Lo Cheng-Lung who battled back after a shaky third inning, giving up four runs, three earned, in six innings of work.

"He had one bad inning," Garcia said. "He had 61 pitches through 3 2/3, and after that he sailed. He did a good job of regaining his concentration and being competitive."

The Bucs gave Cheng-Lung an early lead when the Panners struggled with their gloves in the first inning.

After a bloop single by leadoff hitter Kevin Koski, Dom Duggan sent a chopper to Panners third baseman Beau Mills whose throw sailed wide first allowing both runners to move into scoring position.

Koski and Duggan scored on a Brian Petersen single to right field.

The miscues continued as Petersen took second base when a throw from catcher Jessie Mier went off the glove of shortstop Mark Thompson and into center field.

Petersen moved to third when a Ike Davis grounder went off the glove of second baseman Jovanny Bramasco for the Panners third error of the inning.

Bird got the next batter, Rylan Sandoval to ground into a double play, but Peterson scored on the play, giving the Bucs a 3-0 lead.

"We came out kind of sloppy at first," said Mier. "We made three errors in the first inning. I thought we did a great job of battling back from that actually, but we gave up too many two-strike hits and as a team you can't do that."

The Panners did fight back, getting to Cheng-Lung for one run in the second--a Bramasco RBI single--and three in the third.

With one out in the inning Will Morgan, who came in for the injured Mills, walked and scored on a Geoff Byrns RBI double.

It was one of two doubles on the day for Byrns.

The next batter, Joe Persichina, sent a liner to left field for a single, giving the Panners runners at the corners.

After a Matt Stevens strikeout, Mier singled home Byrns on a grounder to left, and Persichina came around to score on a Bramasco ground ball that went through the legs of Bucs third baseman Robert Taylor.

But it unraveled for Bird and the Panners in the fifth inning.

Taylor lead off the inning with a single, and Chaise Fuller followed up with a sacrifice bunt attempt. The bunt stayed in front of home plate and was scooped up by Mier, whose throw to second was not in time.

The next batter, Kevin Koski, tried another sacrifice, and again the Panners tried and failed to get the lead runner, leaving bases loaded.

Two batters later, Petersen would pick up his third and fourth RBI, with a single to right-center field.

Two more runs would score on a Sandoval single.

"We were going to play it aggressive," Mier said of the decision to go after the lead runners. "We knew that we didn't have any leeway. That was part of our system. We're not going to play on our heels; we're going to play aggressive."

Bird, who took the loss, allowed seven runs, five earned, over five innings of work.

"I made some good pitches, and I made some bad pitches," said Bird, who threw 78 pitches Friday. "I need to make some improvements. Overall, I didn't think I had my best stuff."
